WE ALL KNOW ZACH NEVER DIED, HE IS OUT THERE!! TOGETHER WE CAN WRITE HIS STORY
Zach Slater lives on in US - Always Only Him!

I'm NO fan fic writer; but I thought I'd get the story started.
The idea being that everyone who is interested in progressing the story ADDS a paragraph of their own. What you think happens next to Zach.

Zach's Story

The pounding heat of the explosion sent Zach flying into the external cool air and he found himself plummeting toward the ocean below. Dazed and barely conscious, he was aware of the strapping about his arms and waist, as the air rushed past him and ocean got ever nearer the realization of what had just happened sharpened his mind.
The parachute he had deployed was at it's full for a mere second before he impacted with the water. Pain immediately struck his legs, in his mind he recognized this as a good sign! pain is only felt by the living. The parachute gently floated down beside him and lay on the surface like a giant sea creature, large pieces of the aircraft he had been in just moments ago littered the waves and ebbed at a distance too far to reach with what little strength remained in his battered body. Zach struggled; but managed to unleash his silken savior. He did not know where he was or why he had been aboard a plane; but survival was paramount, so by shear will he swam toward the shoreline with aid of rolling waves.

Face down, Zach could feel the coolness of damp sand against his cheek. He must of passed out with exhaustion upon reaching land. Night was edging away the day, as he slowly rolled to one side to look at his surroundings. Each muscle in his body ached; but there was a screaming pain within that wrapped a darkness around his heart. At first Zach's memory had been foggy, probably a direct result of the explosion. Yes the explosion! He did not think that his Ex Casino partners would go to such an extreme. He had known for some time that they were not happy and even threatened him. They had obviously wanted him dead!; And by fate alone he had cheated them out of succeeding! If the Ex Casino Bosses ever learned he was still alive, he knew they would go after Kendall, his darling Kendall and his two beautiful boys. Realizing he had to stay dead to keep his family safe tore his soul in two He lay on his back, as shallow waves licked at his feet and wept.

(Post by Anonymous) - His heart breaks as he thinks about Kendall he wishes he could be there... by now he knew that someone would have told Kendall that he was dead. But he wasn't, he wanted to get up and shout he wasn't dead but he couldn't. His heart ached with pain he wanted to be with Kendall and the boys. He struggled to get up but only to collapse as soon as he did. Instead he dragged his body to a clearing. He turned over on his back and moaned with pain. His arm was bleeding, his head hurt but worst of all his heart was broken. He was angry, at the world. He tried to get up again and he succeed! His sight was blurry but soon it adjusted. He saw....

(mandy) - A faint light shining through, from beyond a cluster of palm trees that edged the stretch of sand, he had painfully dragged himself over.
He had taken this route in life before; to get away from his father and the Cambias Curse - that had been planned! He was bruised and cut, the angels may have been on his side, he had survived!; but in truth Zach was in agony, thoughts of Kendall, his boys. A cruel fate had been dealt. Zach had a substantial amount of cash zipped in the breast pocket of his jacket, This had been intended for the pilot, for his silence and his assistance. Zach had vague recollection, the explosion had emanated from the cock pit, the pilots loyalty was no longer an issue.
How was he going to return safely to his family?. He needed to locate his ex partners and quietly deal with them; but right now he needed shelter, somewhere he could get cleaned up and out of sight. So with some apprehension he walked toward the light using the trees for support and cover.

The light source came from a parking lot lamp that stood at the periphery, between Zach and the lamp there was an open high wired fence, forming the boundary, the lot was deserted, so he began making his way around the perimeter, encountering another light at the corner of the lot. to Zach's right lay an area of waste ground shrubs and trees, more light filltered through these and he could see a silloette of a building. Following the turn in the fence Zach headed toward the structure.
It was a convieniance store, a little bigger than a 7-11, it too sold Gas; but presently the store was closed. Along side the store was a wash room, for those who required releif on their travels. On the opposite side of the road there were a small number of souvenier shops and a burger joint; but all looked to be quiet. The parking lot, being the ideal place to park for a while, after getting Gas, freshen up, take a look around and get a bite to eat.

To Zach's surprise the wash room door was not locked, he was thankful. Inside he had another surprise, it was actualy quite spacious. Two restrooms and two wash sinks and a faint aroma of pine. Either someone had been in a rush to get off home forgetting to lock up, or it was generaly so quiet in this local there was no need to lock up?
Zach looked in the full length mirror, he looked awful, hardly recognizing his reflection. His hair was matted with sand and blood, there was a cut upon his cheek. The tan jacket he wore was caked in sand and all manner of things, the sleeve to his wounded arm was torn and a little blooded. With what few things there were to hand he went about cleaning himself up.
Zach was not sure of the time, his watch had ceased to work the face had imploded and water had gotten into the mechanism; but this sort of watch you didn't throw away, you got it mended. To bring less attention to himself he placed it in his other breast pocket. His jacket had brushed up well unlike his pants they had many small tares and were badly creased and stained. He was very tired and hungry, he sat down in the corner of the wash room and lent against the cool tiled wall. Food? he would have to wait for the store to open before seeing to that need. Zach's biggest need of all was to wrap his arms around Kendall and breath in her scented hair. Thoughts of Kendall and his boys bought tears once more, this raw pain weakened him, and he fell asleep.
In Zach's dreamlike state he imagined going to Kendall, she was curled up on their large couch, she looked so serine and beautiful, he gently stroked her face, slowly she awoke, he saw love peircing through her diamond eyes, eyes that could always move him. For some time they just looked at eachother, touching and holding, not needing to say a word. They kissed and embraced, it felt so real, Zach looked deep into Kendalls eyes to her soul.
"When you look into our boys eyes, you will see me.
Hear their laugh' you will hear me.
Feel their hands, you will feel me.
Wind on your cheek, I'm with you.
Warmth of the sun in your hair, I'm with you.
No end, no limit, no fear...... thats how we loved.
Thats how you'll live, forever.......
Always Only You.

[Nov 24th *Thanksgiving Eve*]

Zach woke hearing a faint humming noise, and assumed whatever it was; was causing the vibration within the wall he lent against. Someone was in the store. He rose and rinsed his face then made his exit. From his vantage point he watched an elderly man get out of an old red pick-up truck and enter the store. There was another vehicle in the lot so there were one maybe two other people in the store besides the man. The forecourt lights were switched off and the sign on the door read ‘Open’. The elderly man exited the store with a small bag that looked to contain vegetable items, and proceeded across the road, and headed toward the burger joint.

Zach entered the convenience store, trying to act as casual as he could, he still looked rough around the edges and his body still ached. A young lady stood by the refrigerators on the left just passed the checkout desk, and was stocking the shelves with cans of cola. Zach spoke first; he didn’t want to startle her. Quietly he said good morning and that he had just run out of gas further down the road and pardoned his appearance by explaining he had just had a rough night; but you should see the other guy? And with all the charm in the world shrugged and smiled, and she smiled back.

At that moment two men appeared dressed in black suits and sunglasses.  They were obviously not locals.  They came in bought some water while their car was being filled up with gas.  Zach had never seen them before, but knew that they had been sent by his ex-partners who were looking for him. Zach managed to stay out of sight.  The young woman was very eager to stay with him as she seductively smiled at him and said, ‘looks like you could use a good shower and meal’. Zach knew he had to hide and get away, or they would find him. Looking at the attractive woman that was with him, he thought about Kendall and the boys.  He did not want to mislead this woman, but he needed to be somewhere where they could not find him.  If he stayed in a hotel, they certainly would.  He smiled back at her, looked at her with all the charm that only Zach possessed, and said ‘I sure could’. With that, they both went out the back door where her car was. She sensed by his gentle voice, warm smile, honest and sincere eyes that she did not have to be afraid of him. He would not hurt her. She did not usually pick up men like this, but there was something different about him.

The young store assistant introduced herself as Lydia Jefferson, Zach stood next to her car, knowing that she was seeking a response, His name? He couldn’t use Zach; his name was bound to be in the papers! You can call me what you like; but what few friends I have call me Chaz, Chaz Tresal. Unusual name she remarked. Zach smiled “Aye Yie Yie, if I only had a dollar for each time I heard that” Lydia smiled back again and then opened the back door to her car, with a little giggle. “You will have to sit in the back as I have a box of supplies sitting on the front, which I was planning to deliver as soon as Craig, that’s my brother, finishes his breakfast over at BJ’s”. BJ’s Zach thought must be the burger joint. “Your brother?” Zach enquired. “He helps me run the store; but he also has a healthy appetite! She laughed back. “He will be back in a short while, as soon as he returns, we can leave” Lydia could not believe what she was doing, she sensed Chaz needed help, and those two men in the store earlier were the sort you didn’t mess with, she had noticed Chaz staying purposely out of sight, they were not Police or FBI; they had not asked any questions. So what ever trouble Chaz may be in, it wasn’t with the Law! She knew there were risks involved; but wow a man like Chaz doesn’t walk into your life every day! She found him attractive, even in his present state. Lydia was smiling in her day dream when Craig returned. “Gee Sis you look as hot as our turkey bird will tomorrow, what’s got you all flushed?” There had never been secrets between Lydia and Craig and she wasn’t about to start one now. She explained about Chaz and the two men in suits, and no matter what Craig was going to say she was going to help this man, Chaz. “Well Sis, you seam to know what you are doing; but I want to take a look at this guy before you leave with him OK?” Lydia agreed.

Meanwhile back in the car, Zach was seriously reconsidering what he was doing, he didn’t want to endanger this young lady in any way; but it had been reassuring to learn that the two men who had visited the store had not asked any questions with regard to any possible survivors of the airplane crash. They may have already got their answer. His ex partners would have been somewhere close, to ensure the job of getting rid of him, had been successful; and that was exactly what Zach wanted them to believe.

The food that sat on the front seat was extremely tempting and the smell was divine. It was undoubtedly a Thanksgiving parcel for someone. Again thought’s of Kendall, his boys, and the rest of family sitting around a large roasted Turkey  with him about to carve, Zach closed his eyes for a while, to savor the picture he had created in his mind, it hurt deeply; but he held onto it as he had held onto life itself. In his mind and heart they would always be, Always Only Them. He would return to Kendall and his boys by any means, only death would prevent him from doing so.

With a bittersweet smile he opened his eyes he had to laugh ‘Chaz Tresal’ yes in deed a strange name! It was an anagram of his own, words had always fascinated him, and this new name he had literally created for himself at the spur of the moment he could happily live with the name Chaz Tresal, saying it allowed it sounded like the name of a movie star or a writer. He decided his new persona would be a writer. A writer that had just been cheated on by his wife, he didn’t like this idea much but he had already spoken to some local authority saying that he was looking for the Ass who stole his wife, when assisting Ryan and Greenlee a few days back. So he would stick with that story in case he encountered the law at any time; and this young lady Lydia, who had decided to help him had already assumed as much.

Zach sat up a little, as he heard voices approaching, Lydia appeared and opened the rear door, stood next to her Zach assumed was her brother Craig. “OK now you have seen him, can I go?” Lydia expressed. Zach realized he was being checked out by the young man, who looked, for all the world like Josh, Kendall’s half brother; but of course there was no way that it could be him. Zach had shot Josh.

Zach lent forward slowly and said “I would shake hands and introduce myself; but my arm is killing me” he looked to Lydia then back to Craig. “I do believe the other guy looks worse” and smiled at both. Craig shrugged and laughed. “OK Lyd, if this guy meant you any harm I think he would have done so by now, and as he is still in the rear of your car you may as well take him home” Craig then gave Zach a knowing nod, “I’ll see you guys later” then Craig returned to the store. Lydia got in the drivers seat, started the car and maneuvered off the parking lot.

“I have one drop off to make, then we will head home” Lydia said looking into the rear view mirror at Zach, who was now sat up, watching which direction she took.

“Where about did you leave your car?” she asked. Zach had to think quickly, lying had been so easy, years ago before he had met Kendall, actually before he had met Marie, Maria, when he had taken the name of Zach Slater; but something’s you just do not loose, the need for survival, the need for revenge on his ex partners for putting him in this situation, these needs governed the overwhelming need he had to return to Kendall and his boys and love and be loved once again.

Zach lent forward between the front seats, as if looking ahead for his vehicle “It should be about 200 more yards on the left; but I don’t see it, I don’t really care if it has been towed” he remarked “It was her car anyway and I never did like it, she will not even notice it gone” Zach wasn’t sure where all this was coming from; but Lydia seamed to accept what he was saying. He was quiet for the remainder of the short journey to where Lydia dropped off the parcel of food items.

Thank you Always and Mandy!  Your posts and pieces are excellent!  For me, this is a first time and big step to post 'fan fiction' publicly.  You two are masters - your details are great - I will follow and learn from you!  Great fun! Of course, I will preserve the history and integrity of our beloved Zach/TK.  He is such a wonderful character to write about.

They had entered the outskirts of a small town and continued along its main street, passing shops, bars, and deli’s, there were very few people about. Zach had caught a glimpse of a clock in a store while stopped at an intersection. 9.15am He slouched back in the seat, he wasn’t feeling too good, no food or water, battered and bruised; and aching fiercely within, with agonizing loss.

Lydia made a left turn and then another and then a right onto a private drive. The modest two storey house was set back from the road, surrounded by trees and looked like it had been plucked out of the English country side. Zach admired the Architectural features of the property; but remained in the car while Lydia went about delivering the parcel. He noticed that she had a key, and had let herself in; leaving the door open Zach could see inside to a spacious hall leading to a flight of stairs. Lydia had placed the parcel down and was letting herself be known to the occupier. Mike he heard her call, as she entered a room to her left, then he saw her in the hall once more and then heading up the stairs, which she climbed with some urgency, calling out Mike. After a few minutes Lydia returned to the car with the parcel, having searched and relocked the house. “Well that is strange! Mike was due back from his business trip yesterday, his jacket is not in the hall and his bed hasn’t been slept in.” she looked worried. ”Perhaps he has been delayed” Zach offered. Lydia continued “It may be nothing; but he didn’t want to take this last job, something about a package he had been given at the last minute, he had agreed because the payment was up front and sizable and now I’m worried he has got himself into some serious shit this time” Zach was feeling a little worse; but something about what Lydia was saying, set off alarm bells in his mind. “What does, Mike is it? Do for a living, if you don’t mind me asking?” “He’s a Private flight courier, parcels and people, people mostly” Lydia replied as she turned to look at Zach. “Never mind Mike, he’s a big boy!! He’s probably just forgotten that I was delivering this parcel; but it will not go to waste! She smiled that sweet smile, that reminded him of Kendall and in such close quarters he could see subtle fiery flecks in her green eyes dance. Lydia was a very attractive young lady and any man would not be able to deny her beauty. As if broken from a trance he felt her cool hand tough his forehead. “You’re burning up, I think we better get you home before a fever takes hold” Zach smiled “I’m just a little hungry and dehydrated that’s all, I haven’t eaten or drunk anything for over 24hr’s” Lydia fished out a can of orange soda from the parcel. “Mike’s favourite; but as he’s not here, I don’t think he will mind” she handed Zach the can and then produced a small pecan pie; she removed the cellophane and handed that to Zach too. “There isn’t a man alive that doesn’t like my pecan pie” Zach took both items and started to eat, giving a wink and nod in agreement. Lydia watched for a few seconds how Chaz bit into the pie and licked his lips and took a sip of the soda, what was it about this man, that made her feel so at ease in his company, she felt like she really knew him. Chaz’s smile wow, of that she would never tire, and then he winked. Snap out of it, she mentally scolded herself. “Right let’s get you home and out of those clothes” Zach could see Lydia’s cheeks change to a pale magenta “So, so, so that I can attend to your wounded arm” she stammered.

By the time Lydia pulled up at her home Zach had finished the pie and soda. He had been tempted to look in the parcel for another treat; the pecan pie really was something special. Lydia had informed him on route that she shared the property with her brother; and her Father lived just a block away, and explained that her baking skills were passed down from her father whose name Zach learnt was Bob, the owner of the burger joint. Piecing things together Zach realized he must be the elderly man from earlier this morning. Lydia had chatted quite freely for the best part of the 20 minute journey, Zach smiled to himself, Kendall could give Lydia a run for her money, what was it about women and talking? And what would he give right now to hear Kendall’s voice.

Her place was a single storey house with an open front yard, pleasantly located off a very quiet intersection; the nearest property was across the street, which during a normal working week was a day care centre, informed by the sign out front. It appeared to be locked up for the Thanksgiving Holidays.

Inside Zach was mused by the red couch, which took up quite a large area of the room. Lydia had also explained that it was a three bedroom property and that he was welcome to use the rear bedroom, for as long as he wished; but they would discuss rent if he wanted to stay longer than a week. Zach found himself liking this girl, she may have come on to him in the convenience store; but he felt there was more to her, than one would first assume. Zach didn’t really assume anything about anyone, he normally relied upon gut feeling; and his gut was telling him that she was a good person, one he could learn to trust; but he would have to be careful not to lead her on, for he had seen in her eyes a sleeping passion, he did not want to be the one to awaken it! Somewhere to stay, somewhere nobody would be looking for him, was the only reason he had taken up Lydia’s offer.

Lydia placed the parcel, with the remaining items on the breakfast bar. The bar separated the kitchen and dining area from the lounge.

“Through here” she beckoned Zach to follow her, as she passed a hall closet she armed herself with two cream colored towels, which she then placed on the King sized bed. To the right Lydia opened another door, “this is Craig’s bathroom which he uses from the adjoining bedroom, when you have showered you will find sweat pants & tops in the drawers in your room.  And before you put a top on I’ll see to that arm” she smiled and briskly made to exit the room, Zach caught her by the hand “Thank you Lydia, your kindness means a lot to me! But I have to say this now before I make myself more at home here” Zach looked down with a sigh. “I like you and I think we could be very good friends; but nothing more; I would not want you to miss read my gratitude of your kindness toward me, for anything more than what it is; a friend being thankful…. I would really like for us to be friends, hopefully good friends?” Zach stood there for a few seconds he raised his head and looked into her eyes, she was smiling at him, still holding hands Lydia firmed up her grip in a hand shake gesture “Friends it is!....I’ll be in the kitchen” she then turned, left the bedroom and shut the door behind her.

Lydia wasn’t sad or angry or even down with herself, she had initially offered Chaz a place to stay, because she was physically attracted to him and she knew he needed help. During the ride home she had seen in his eyes deep hurt and sadness, he still loved his wife. Chaz needed a friend and she was happy to be that for him. That brief holding of his hand and looking into his eyes Lydia understood the depth of love and the loss; but why would a woman hurt this man in such a way? There was more going on with Chaz than just a fight with his wife’s fancy man. He had purposely stayed out of view from those two men in suits back at the store. Was she, she thought getting into something serious, just like Mike usually did?

She called Mikes house from her cell phone, then tried his cell, no answer from either. She decided to wait until Craig was home and ask him if he knew where he may have gone or where he had decided to stay.

Lydia was quietly preparing a light lunch for the two of them when Chaz appeared bare foot at the end of the work counter. Wearing nothing more than a pair of black sweat pants. He was now clean shaven and looked gorgeous, yet Lydia recognized immediately that she felt more of a sisterly fondness toward him than desire. “Sit down on this stool and eat, while I dress that wound on your arm.” Lydia pulled a high stool from beside the breakfast bar and Zach perched himself on it. “This is quite a nasty cut, it really ought to have stitches” sensing Chaz’s dislike to this idea, she continued “but as it’s only bleeding a little I’m sure I can sort something out.” Lydia noticed that Chaz had a number of smaller cuts and bruises all over his chest all varying in degree. “Chaz please tell me, did you kill the other man?” Having not said a word since entering the kitchen Zach looked at Lydia “No I didn’t kill anyone; but there are a few people that want me dead” He wasn’t sure why he had offered this information; but it only seamed fair to let her know his reason for wanting to stay a while. “And your wife?” Lydia inquired. “I cannot speak to her or allow myself to go near her, well not for a while at least, there are things I must do before I can do that” Zach had spoken the truth; but he knew Lydia was assuming that he had, had a brawl or fight and maybe he was referring to something more personal. He didn’t say any more and Lydia didn’t pry. He would tell her more if he needed to. Zach tucked into the grilled chicken sandwich with pickles and chips while Lydia applied a gauze and bandage to his arm. Lydia gave Zach a beer from the fridge and popped the top off a bottle of soda for herself and moved to the couch. Zach pulled on the sweat top, he had not been cold; but found warmth in its familiarity, and he smiled to himself as he looked down at the Red Wing logo. “Am I to assume Craig is an Ice Hockey Fan?” Zach casually asked as he sat down along side Lydia. "Oh we both like the Red Wings" There conversation continued light and easy. After eating Zach helped Lydia tidy the kitchen and assisted with some of the preparations for the Thanksgiving meal. Lydia could see Chaz was tired and suggested he take a nap; and would wake him around 6pm for dinner. He was tired and returned to the bedroom he had so graciously been given use of. He lay on the bed looking up at the ceiling, a plan was hatching in his mind; he now had a base to work from, thanks to Lydia and Craig and being UN-dead, meant he had the upper hand with regard to his ex partners; but he would have to wait until after Thanksgiving to instigate his plan of action.

Here he was in a stranger's house relying on the trust of Lydia, but he felt that he was safe with her. Zach was always good at reading people.  He could watch people's actions, listen to their voice, look into their eyes, and from that know where they came from, and what their intentions were.  It may have been a curse to be a Cambias, but he inherited their gift to always stay a step ahead of everyone, or was that part of the curse as well.  His mind drifted to Kendall and the boys.  He knew how devastated Kendall would be when she heard about the plane crash. It pained him to think of how upset she, and the boys would be.  He was hoping that somehow she would know he was OK, and that he would return to her.  He had to get back to them. He wanted life to get back to normal, but he knew that was going to take time. He had work to do. He had made sure that Kendall and the boys were protected before he left, and that his ex-partners could not harm them in anyway. She did not know it but he had several people watching her, and had set everything up to be sure that she and the boys would be well taken care of and provided for in his absence, or in case he did not return. In his methodical, planned, but always caring way, he had worked out all the details well in advance.
Right now, he needed to know more about Mike.  He was going to have to ask Lydia some more questions about him.  He could hear Lydia saying casually, 'He's a private flight courier, parcels and people', but recalled the nervous, pained look on her face when she realized that he had not returned home.  He had to at least see a photo of him if he could not meet him in person. Had something happened to Mike, or was he completing a 'mission' that was taking longer than expected. He needed to know if he had to be concerned about Mike, which if he was alive, his gut told him he may have to be.  He suspected that Lydia did not even know the real truth about Mike, but he would be able to figure out who Mike was just by listening to her talk about him.  Although Lydia seemed very sharp, she seemed trusting and innocent and would believe a story that Mike would tell her not because she wasn't smart but because she wanted to believe him. She seemed like she was the type of person despite any hardships she had in her life, and he felt she had had many, she wanted to hold on to the belief that people were really good at heart, and that there was goodness in the world.  It was probably the only thing that kept her going even with the disappointments. She kept hoping for better. Without that hope, she could never survive. Thinking about all the obstacles in his life, the hard decisions that he had to make, and what he was confronting now, he knew what that was like.

Zach slept soundly although he ached from mental, emotional and physical strains that had been thrust upon him recently; he was now comfortable, clean and clear of what he had to do; to rid himself and his family, from any outside threats. He woke to muffled voices and the sound of Lydia crying. He recognized Craig’s voice; but there was a third voice, deeper and more gravely than Craig’s. Zach’s room was now in darkness, he switched the bedside lamp on to read the time on the small clock which sat on the table, it was a little after 7pm, and he had slept for over four hours. Obviously something traumatic had occurred, so he would not intrude. A few minutes later there came a knock at his door, he got up and answered it. Craig stood there, and Zach could see he too had been crying. “Sorry for not waking you earlier; but we have just had some really sad news and Lyd, actually we have all taken it pretty bad. We are going to order a pizza, as none of us really feel like cooking”  “I don’t want to encroach on your family time” Zach interrupted” “You maybe able to help, as a distraction, ya know? So please join us” Craig said with a half smile. Zach followed Craig back into the lounge where he was introduced to Bob Jefferson, Lydia and Craig’s father who Zach also learned was Mike’s elder brother. And it was news about Mike that had bought tears to each of them. Craig quietly informed Zach while he looked over the pizza menu that Mike had been in a fatal accident, his plane exploded over the ocean. Mikes body or the man he was chartering had not been found.

Zach could barely register what Craig was telling him; he said nothing; but inside the anger toward his ex partners grew. They had deprived not only his family of a husband and father; but also the Jefferson’s of an Uncle and brother. Zach hardly said a word for the rest of the evening. He sat quietly at the breakfast bar, ate his pizza and drank two beers.

Bob left around 10pm and Craig too decided to call it a night, leaving Lydia alone with Zach. Lydia had been very quiet also and had hardly eaten a thing, she had been sipping on brandy for the best part of an hour, her eyes were puffy and physically she looked limp. Zach sensed she wanted to talk; but he didn’t know what to say. What does a man say to a person that is grieving a loved one, when he! Maybe the one to have influenced his end just by association? Another cruel hand of fate or the worst kind of blessing? Zach sat next to Lydia put his arm around her and hugged gently.

The quiet comfort of this near stranger gave Lydia peace, safe in his arms she began describing Mike to Chaz, it was sort of cathartic and soothing to talk to someone about her Uncle, someone who wouldn’t judge Mike for the way he lived. Lydia talked for quite a while and Zach listened and it became apparently clear, with no more assumptions that Mike was indeed the pilot of the plane he had chartered.

It had turned 12 midnight when Lydia thanked Zach for being a good friend for listening and retired to bed.

Thanksgiving Day was a little subdued, there were tears and laughter as the Jefferson’s recanted small stories of Mike’s escapades. He sounded quite a character; a man with a good kind heart, just like the rest of the family.

Following Thanksgiving, Zach had Craig drop him off at a used car dealership, where he purchased a rather none descript people carrier. He paid cash and no questions were asked; the vehicle’s cost made a dent in the not so redundant cash. Zach had been frugal; but had to buy something that was also reliable. He had other items to purchase, a computer laptop, cell phone and clothes; but most importantly an Identity. Chaz Tresal had been born!

He managed to do all these leaving $1075 left to survive upon.

He needed to find a local card gaming house, the sort that are tucked away in seedy bars, were he could begin with low stakes and gradually work up. He was lucky with cards and it would be only a matter of time before he would have a sizable amount. This part of his plan he would undertake alone.

As tragic as the news had been of Mike’s death, the Jefferson’s soon went about organizing a memorial. It was the afternoon of the memorial when friends of Mike had all returned home, that Lydia asked Zach for his help. “On the day I brought you home” Lydia smiled, “we talked about many things, you told me you were a writer and things were not so good with your wife etc, I know you are not working right now, so I would like to offer you a job” Zach was intrigued “Doing what exactly?” “Someone gave a parcel to Mike; Mike told me he had a gut feeling it was bad news; but he always did like a bit of an adventure or mystery! Living life on the edge he used to say” Zach could see sadness in her eyes as she continued “I told you about the large sum of money he took for taking this parcel?” Zach nodded “Chaz I would like for you to dig into Mikes papers, receipts anything to find out who gave that parcel to him, I just wouldn’t know what to look for, you on the other hand would, because you are a writer and all writers do research? I’m not asking you to write a book about Mike just get some answers as to what happened. I’ll pay you with the money that Mike received from this unknown man” Zach couldn’t refuse; but had to be careful not to show how happy he was to assist Lydia, he had his own reasons for wanting to know who the unknown man was. The second part of Zach's plan had just been offered to him. “I will gladly help you Lydia, you have shown me so much kindness, there’s no need to pay me! I’ll get by I have royalties trickling in from the few books I have written.” Zach gave Lydia his I’ll do anything for you smile, a smile she had given a name to when he had put away dishes after Thanksgiving meal last Thursday “So you will help me?” Lydia asked Chaz once again. “Willingly” Zach replied and put out his hand to shake on their small deal. “We will go over to Mikes first thing tomorrow morning and get started” she ended happily.

Excellent, Mandy!  I like that Mike was the pilot of the plane that Zach was on and crashed.  I was thinking of that as well.

Zach had faced overwhelming odds before and had come out on top.  He was hoping he could muster the emotional, mental, and physical strength to do that again. He was getting older, and it was getting harder to land on his feet.  Although he had spent so much of his life running from the Cambias curse, it was that inborn power that had made him be able to look death in the eye, and knock it down. No matter how hard he had tried to run from being a Cambias, he still was. He could fake his death, change his name, but he couldn’t change his blood. He always tried to use that inborn power and strength for the good.  He survived the crash, but would he be able to stamp out his vigilante partners who were trying to take over everything he had worked for. He learned young never to trust anyone. He knew he had made a pack with the devil when he got involved with his partners, but in his eagerness to run away from the Cambias name and not wanting to use that money, he had used their money to get started and offered them a percentage in the business. He had paid them off and much more, but because of his exceptional ability, Zach built an empire, and now they wanted it all. If they killed him, they would have it all. He feared if they could not get to him, they would hurt Kendall and the boys because they knew that would destroy him. First he had to make sure that he got in touch with his people that were watching and protecting Kendall, and the boys to make sure that they were safe and that they stayed on it. Then he would go after the partners.  He felt that Mike worked for them, but Lydia did not know the other side of Mike. He was the jovial funny uncle with a dark side. He would find out the connection, and then work from there. The package that he was carrying was probably just a front. Mike had been used as a pawn.  Zach new that his partners would stop at nothing to get control of his fortune.

Hi Mandy,
Thank you. I was not sure what to do with the package, so I made it a front, but you are welcome to take it where you want to - it does not have to be a front - Zach can find out it isn't.  Just have to add this - the other night I was driving in the snow on a road outside of Boston and came across a place called the Red Wing Diner - of course, I thought of TK.  I could not resist - I pulled into the parking lot, got out of the car ( in the snow mind you) and took a photo with my iphone of the sign with the big red wing on it . I even went in and ate there .  I am not sure how to post the photo on this site yet, but I will try to figure it out, and post it. Actually, I would like to figure out a way to add the diner to the story.  It was a TK moment!

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday!

Warmest regards to all ( RJ4-Rhonda).

It was obvious that the partners now wanted it all and no doubt that they believed with Zach dead they would have it all.
Zach had made a revision to his *will* with his Lawyer Roger, before he’d approached his casino partners, aware of the danger that would befall his family if his partners didn’t get the deal they wanted. The negotiations had been very tough; but an agreement had been decided upon.
Zach was aware that the sale of the casino’s had not yet been finalized; and It was only a matter of time before his *will* would be read out and dealt with.
His partners would have assumed ownership of the casino’s; but Zach had transferred his 80% shares to Kendall
Zach needed to get in touch with his people watching and protecting his family, have them double their duty and tighten surveillance. They had been in place since the decision had been made to sell his casino shares; Zach had also set up a Swiss account, where he had deposited $250,000 always prepared for the worst situation; but this situation had arisen somewhat out of the blue.
He needed to let his men know he was alive and assured that his family would remain safe while he was out of town.
Zach would soon require the PIN number to the Swiss account to release some cash, that number was tucked inside an envelope on a high mantle, inside his home; but for now he would get by on the winnings from the card games he played with the locals at a near by bar. ‘Dirk Digger’s Dive’ it also provided an ideal location for meeting the necessary people to orchestrate his complete takeover of his casinos and stay low.

Zach and Lydia had visited Mike’s house; and nothing could be found amongst his papers and files that could give them a clue as to whom Mike was carrying the parcel for, to Zach’s dismay.
A week or so later, Zach noticed something strange about the two front rooms that lead off each side of the central hall. They were designed to be equal in size; but one was narrower than the other. Zach surmised there was a space behind the panel wall that ran the length of the room and about 4ft wide. It hadn’t taken them long to find the door; but it was locked.
A secret hiding space? Zach was no stranger to those, he had a secret room of his own; but what had Mike needed one for? Lydia and he soon discovered!
Lydia remembered finding a set of keys hanging on a hook in the wardrobe behind Mike’s clothes, when she had removed them a few days ago.
With these the door had opened quite freely, as thou the space was used frequently. Inside there was a computer, some surveillance equipment and shelving, upon the shelves were approximately a 100 to 200 labeled discs. Zach had a memory flash back to when he and Dixie had found Dr Madden’s videos.
The computer was switched on and providing visual to each of the rooms in the house and the garage. Zach could not help but admire the sophistication of the set up, he had not noticed any camera’s in any of the rooms!
“This room reminds me of that film with Jodi Foster, I wonder why Uncle Mike needed a Panic Room” Lydia asked the question more to herself and without hesitation took one of the discs from its case and inserted it into the hard-drive.
A close up of Mike with a happy grin on his face filled the screen, he spoke quietly to the camera and his viewing ordinance “Some parts of my job I dislike; but this, this I enjoy”
He exited the view, to reveal a naked man sitting on a metal chair which sat on a large plastic sheet. The man was tied and gagged. Mike once more came into view he was now holding an aluminum baseball bat. Mike raised the bat slowly and gently tapped the mans leg, sheer panic was seen in the mans eyes as he looked at Mike and a muffled pleading noises could be heard.
Zach lent forward and hit the esc button, he knew what was about to happen, Lydia too had swiftly come to the same conclusion. The grizzly truth and nature of the man had been unleashed in less than two minutes of footage.

Lydia had been subdued and withdrawn for many weeks. Christmas with the Jefferson’s had been very emotional and painful, for the family and for Zach. Mike had not been the Uncle that they had perceived him to be; the information that had come to light had a profound effect on them all.

Zach had been back to the house and watched a great number of the disc’s and learnt many things about Mike! He could barely stomach watching the man enjoy his work; but work it was. Mike was a professional remover of unwanted attention; he took out the trash and enjoyed it.
If Zach had followed in his fathers footsteps and life as Alexander Cambias Jr. Mike could well have been the sort of person Alexander may have required the skills of? Then a thought occurred to him. Who ever wanted him dead, perhaps wanted Mike dead too?

He didn’t want Lydia or her family to concern themselves or learn his reason for investigating Mike’s hidden dark-side more deeply. Spending hours looking at each disc would have drawn un-wanted attention; and he had seen enough for now.

Zach made copies of all the disc’s so that his people could look through them to find possible clues or connections to him or his casino partners. Not just one copy; but two, he knew that having two copies of this material was wise. Information there in may provide leverage of some kind in the future? And one copy may fall into the wrong hands. Ryan’s he really didn’t trust the man. While producing the disc copies Zach had come across a file on the computer’s hard drive, a list of dates and Names with two headings ‘Fly’ and ‘Fry’.

Mike obviously kept his records up to date! The latest entry read Zach Slater and in the column under ‘Fly’ the agreed sum of $10,000

Mike had been someone who had watched his own back and was prepared to play dirty with the big boy’s if necessary. It also explained why a number of disc’s had FF- month and year written on them. He checked these to find that FF-11-10 was missing. Zach made two copies of FF-11-10 for himself.

One set of copies he posted to Pine Valley, to his men there. The other set he stored in a  safety deposit box at a local Postal Centre, a couple of blocks down the road from the triple ‘D’, Dirk Diggler’s Dive, leaving all the original disc’s and files at Mike’s as he had found them.

Lydia and Craig were slowly getting back into their old routine of opening up the Gas stop and shop on the outskirts of town; And Bob with his burger joint ‘BJ’s’

Weeks had past since learning of Mike’s dark side; but very little had been said. Mike’s place had not been visited since Zach was last there nearly three weeks ago.

Zach had spent quite a bit of time at the triple ‘D’ and had integrated himself quite easily into the card games that were played there, at all hours of the day and night. Purposely loosing a little here and there, so as not to alienate himself, for being a big shot who win's all the time. Making on average $2,000 a week. He had entered a couple of all night games. The first time; he played to his audience, winning big then loosing and leaving in the early hours of the morning, having only just broken even. And tonight Zach put himself in a hole for  $3,000 before his presumed luck started to change. The mood at the table changed as Zach clawed back the $3.000 plus a further $15,000 he realized it was time, to loose a little once more. He let his pot slide to $11.000 before calling it quit’s, having made a total of $10,000 in two nights.

This was pocket change to Zach. It would take too long to build up a sizable amount of money, at this rate; he barely had enough to go ahead with his plan against the casino partners.

He left the bar and his new found friends, now jested that he was cutting and running. Better this way he thought than knives and gun’s drawn.

He got back to Lydia and Craig’s around 5.15am just as Craig was heading out for an early morning run. They exchanged pleasantries and Zach continued inside.

Zach past the mirror in the hall, glancing at his reflection. “Hi Yie Yie! Chaz you are getting too old for this” he remarked shaking his head and rubbing his beard stubble. He should be joining Craig on his run not wandering in, from being out all night.

He showered and checked his emails. He was expecting a message from his man in Pine Valley. He had requested; some time ago that he learn the whereabouts of Lilly Montgomery, Jacksons daughter, Jackson was the on / off partner to Erica, Kendall’s mother. Lilly had gone off to college a couple of years ago. Lilly he knew he could trust, asweet and very bright kid and the ideal person for the job he required. He only hoped she would want to help him regain full ownership of the casino’s to enable him to return to his family? as there was some danger involved.

Finally his man had good news Lilly had been located and approached with the question in strict confidence that she not repeat or inform anyone of what she was about to learn or be asked to do. But before she would give an answer she insisted on meeting Zach in person first. He noticed that she was located not far from one of his west coast casino’s an ideal starting point if she were to agree to his plan.

Zach dialed the contact number that had been provided in the email, he recognized her slight chirpy happy voice immediately. “Is this Lilly Montgomery”? He asked, there was a short silence then Lilly asked “how do I know you are, who you say you are” Zach smiled “You do not like the color red, loud voices and you once taught me a very good lesson on how to be a parent, when you walked backward into a door” Lilly was quiet, then “So it’s true, you are Zach and everyone thinks you are dead; but your not dead are you”? “No Lilly, I’m not dead and I really need your help” Zach replied. They talked for a while and Zach agreed he would meet her at a well known “Red Wings” sports bar located on the interstate. “There is red in the logo and they use red cup’s inside” Lilly remarked “But I will be ok” she added “I don’t dislike the color red as much as I used to” They agreed a date, time and what each of them would be wearing, for ease of recognition.

Zach ended the call feeling more positive than he had in a while. He closed the email and shut down his lap top.

There was a knock at Zach’s door “Chaz, are you home”? Zach tightened the towel around his waist, as he had not yet dressed from taking a shower, and then opened the door a little. Lydia nearly forgot what it was she wanted to tell Chaz, she hadn’t seen him stripped to the waist since the day she bandaged his arm, the day she brought him home. She stood there for a few seconds not uttering a word, just mesmerized by his physic, how could a man be out all night drinking, playing cards and look this rugged and handsome at the same time? She thought to herself. “Lydia are you OK”? Zach inquired.

She looked puzzled and a little frightened Zach thought. Zach placed his hand on her shoulder. “Lydia what’s wrong”? She looked up, in her eye’s he could see deep hurt and sadness “Let me dress and we will talk” Zach suggested. She didn’t say a thing, but retreated to the living room.

A few moments later Zach joined her. They sat in silence for a few minutes. “Chaz isn’t your real name is it”? Lydia’s question was more like a statement. Zach thought she knows who I really am? “What makes you say that”? Zach asked.

Lydia quietly explained that last night while he and Craig were out, she had a visit from two FBI Agents. “They are investigating Mike’s and his passenger a Mr. Zach Slater’s mysterious death’s, they think that Mike and Mr. Slater were possibly murdered” she said as she looked at Zach. “And they showed me pictures of Mr. Slater” she added, there were now tear’s in her eye’s. Zach took both of Lydia’s hands “Your name is Zach, not Chaz, you lied to me” again this was more a statement than a question; Zach just nodded. He cupped her face gently with his hand and wiped away Lydia’s tears with a soft caress of his thumb. Lydia continued in a hushed voice “I lied to the FBI, I told them that I did not know you or had seen you” Zach realized also at that point, Lydia had not told Craig or her father who he really was. Craig would have certainly said something when he saw him earlier; And Bob would be here now, demanding an answer from him, for deceiving them.

Zach slowly stood “I’ll leave if you want me to, it’s probably best that I do” Lydia rose in front of him, she was battling with so many emotions, she really liked Chaz / Zach and had struggled daily for some time with her feelings for him. The very first time she saw him, there had been a pure physical attraction then later brotherly fondness. Now she was in love with him; but not the brotherly kind. She thought of him day and night. These feelings she could hide no more; but was totally aware that Zach did not feel for her what she felt for him. He had been a gentleman at all times; “I don’t want you to leave Zach” Lydia softly uttered.

Zach stood looking at Lydia; she was so beautiful, venerable yet strong, he could see her struggling with her feelings he knew she liked him liked him enough to lie to the FBI; but she was hurting inside because she had guessed he would want or need to leave. Lydia had been his Angel on earth, when he needed one most, he would forever be thankful for her kindness.

This was their good bye he lent his head down to hers as her arms wrapped around his neck and her sweet tender lips found his. He circled his arms around her body his one hand found the hollow of her back the other the firmness of her petite buttock, Zach lost himself with need, need for Kendall, and his heart raced and his manhood ached. He held her closer and deepened the kiss.

He stopped abruptly……..but continued to hold her, then whispered in Lydia’s ear “Sorry I cannot give you, the goodbye you want” He kissed her once more, this time with soul purpose. Their kiss came to a mutual end as Craig entered the house, returning from his run. Zach held Lydia for a few more seconds then returned to his bedroom and without a word between them Lydia went to hers.

CHAPTER 3.

Zach sat back in the seat of his vehicle and surveyed the car park of the Red Wing sports bar; he was a half hour early for his meeting with Lilly. He had slept in four different Motels in as many nights, using cash so as not to leave a trail. For added measure, he had also allowed his facial hair to grow.

He had left Lydia & Craig’s in the middle of the night, there was nothing more to be said between him and Lydia and he had not wanted to prolong his stay any further, In truth he now recognized he had stayed too long. The FBI were practically breathing down his neck! He also knew that Lydia would not keep the truth from her brother. Craig was a good kid and Zach had enjoyed his company; but also knew he would not be able to keep this information to himself, he just liked to talk! He may not tell the authorities; but share with the Guys at DD’s and possibly leak it to the wrong people, which would prove dangerous for Zach, Lydia and Craig if he stayed. He had left a note for Lydia under her door…his gratitude for her open hospitality was one thing, his feelings toward her an other. He knew, if things had been different, if he did not love Kendall and his boys as he did; he would not be leaving Lydia behind and in his letter, he gently told her so.

His letter was small comfort, he thought; as he lowered the window to get a better view of the rider upon the Harley Davidson that had just pulled and parked outside the Red Wing. The female rider was in full black leather, her long legs wrapped around the bike like two giant black snakes!

He smiled as an image came to mind of Kendall a few years ago when she revealed her Red Wing’s outfit, from beneath a trench coat. He had been unashamedly hot for her that evening, they had made love, right there on the couch, as they had done so many times before and her long silken legs were a joy, as she had wrapped them around him... He ached to hold Kendall like that again.

A tear escaped and rolled down his cheek, bringing him back to the young lady and the Harley. She was now securing her helmet to the side of the motor cycle. Her face was covered by long dark hair; but he knew who this raven beauty was; it was Lilly. He also knew, without a personal description, what she would be wearing and how she would be arriving, he would not have recognized her, actually Zach thought, even Jack, her own father probably would not recognize her, visually!

Just before leaving the Motel Zach had received a message from one of his men in Pine Valley, a woman called Diana Holden had been found murdered in Dr Castillo’s bedroom. Zach’s man was not aware that Diana Holden was a female acquaintance to one of Zach’s casino partners and that the Doctor, was also someone Zach personally knew. He was only reporting with an up date, Zach messaged back. “Do not let Kendall or my boys out of your sight; put double duty on each of them; and at all times remain invisible. I am heading back to PV directly and will contact you, stay alert” he got confirmation that the message was received and understood. His absence in PV was just one less obstacle for his casino partners. Things in Pine Valley, he feared were getting out of hand, he needed to get back to his family. His plans for Lilly, commandeering money from the casino’s, would be scrapped. A plan that had not really sat well with him, from the start. But news about Diana’s murder came too late, for him to call Lilly and cancel their meeting.

Zach had waited for Lilly to enter the sports bar, and then followed shortly after; when he was satisfied that nobody had followed her. As he entered the Red Wing, he could see Lilly had taken a seat at the bar. He approached the bar, as the bar tender served her with a drink placing it on a napkin in front of her. With the red stir stick provided Lilly began to gently prod the ice cubes as Zach took a seat to her right, she slowly turned to face him and held his gaze,

“Have you walked into any walls lately?” she asked; Zach smiled, Lilly looked so different, more worldly, but in her eyes, he saw her vulnerability and it was apparent to him; even without the knowledge of the PV murder he would not involve her in his plans.

“No, I had a good teacher” Zach quietly replied. Zach ordered a lite beer.

“Let’s get a table? He suggested “We have lots to catch up on” Zach added as he picked up his and Lilly’s drink and headed toward a booth in the corner. He noticed a few young men looking at Lilly with admiration as they walked by their table, he also felt eyes upon him, maybe arranging to meet here wasn’t such a good idea he thought?

Over their shared meal of chili wings, fries pickles and coleslaw Zach explained that his plans had changed, They talked for a while and as before Lilly was pleasant company, her spirit was infectious although slightly dulled with time and what she had learnt of the world. They both had another drink before leaving. He thanked her for meeting him and he promised to give her love to Jack & Erica and the rest of the family when he returned to Pine Valley. A promise he would be more than happy to keep.

Zach lay upon another motel bed, looking up at yet another motel ceiling; except this ceiling came with constant multi colored lighting that changed in tandem with the sign that hung low outside his window. Like a hundred candles on a birthday cake, relighting themselves simultaneously each time they are blown out. The room didn't need any other form of artificial lighting but for Zach the room was dark, and every room would remain dark, until he could share it with Kendall. She was the light of his life, the reason he had survived the explosion.

Meeting Lilly may have been a breath of fresh air, and Lidia a caring safe haven; but Kendall and his boys were his sole reason for living.

Early tomorrow he would head back to Pine Valley The news about Diana, gave him reason to believe that his casino partners were already there. He would make sure Kendall was safe and if all was well he would find a way to work with the FBI to bring the casino partners to justice for his attempted murder. The room closed in around him and he fell asleep.
