What a welcome and pleasant surprise this week has been! For the first time in at least a month, Zach has been on every day... and it's been quality.

Zach is back... the real Zach Slater, that is. The dark, dangerous, secretive casino owner. A man I was afraid was lost to us. It's very, VERY nice to see he's only been hiding. I hate that it has taken perpetual betrayal to bring him back out, but I'm not surprised. Zach Slater was born out of betrayal, honed in distrust, and survived through isolation. That doesn't mean his heart has changed. It just means that the real Zach Slater has to protect it... again. Because one man can only take so much betrayal, one man can only take so much loss, and one man can only withstand so much neglect.

Once upon a time, Zach had a mother and a baby brother that he loved... that family was ripped away from him by a psychotic father. He had to run away to save his sanity and his soul, and give up any hope for love, family or belonging. For a brief moment, 24 perfect weeks, he found love in the desert with Maureen and had hope. But that hope was short-lived when she ran away from him -- not because of anything he had done, but because of a lie about what she had done, and she left him to protect him. All he knew, though, was that she was gone and whatever faith he had left after his father's abuse was gone. He was even more cold, calculating and withdrawn than before -- a dangerous man. Someone not to be trifled with. A man who did not tolerate mistakes, and a man who no one would consider betraying.

All that changed when he met Bianca Montgomery and Myrtle Fargate. They connected with him in a way that only his mother and Maureen had done in the past... they recognized the pain that was hiding in his tremendous heart. They recognized the love he had to give, the loyalty he had to express, and the need he had for love, acceptance and a family. For a short time, Bianca offered him acceptance and understanding. Even though she didn't know who he was, she still allowed him to grieve the loss of her daughter with her. Myrtle, bless her heart, gave him more from the very beginning than anyone ever has... after one conversation, she saw into his soul and accepted him. Except for his mother, she is the only person who ever has. I would give anything right now for Myrtle to be there with Zach and for him, just to give him the love and comfort he deserves but never receives.

Bianca betrayed him... she turned on him in favor of the person who claimed to be his son. No one will ever convince me that it was anything other than an elaborate ruse that hurt Zach deeply. Maureen was there, as Maria, but she certainly betrayed him. Took his secrets and used them against him and accused him of crimes he didn't commit just to make herself feel better. Betrayals, nonetheless. Betrayals that Zach eventually forgave. Just like Ethan -- my opinion is unchangeable, but Zach loved him and the guilt Zach feels over that relationship will never end. But I consider Ethan a betrayal -- because Ethan never wanted to know Zach and never forgave him for being alive.

After so long... so much pain and so many betrayals, Zach found a life of love, family and acceptance. He forged a relationship with Erica, he found love with Kendall, he became a father, and started believing in his ability to not turn into his father. Josh asked for a chance and Zach gave it to him... Josh stepped up and supported Zach during a very dark time when Ian was born, and he gave him love and loyalty like no other. Zach's words to Kendall about that time were telling, "He was there when Ian was about a pound. And he held him in the hosptial and... no one else would even... even look at him." That no one else included Kendall. She was so wrapped up in Spike that she ignored her infant son for months... and everyone else was so wrapped up in Kendall that Ian was (and still is) an afterthought. Except to Josh. Josh was the only one who cared about Ian... he was the only one who sat vigil with Zach and spent time with Ian when Zach couldn't be there. Zach loved his brother Micheal -- it practically destroyed him when he realized the monster that Michael had become, and he's never forgiven himself for leaving Michael. Josh became the brother that Zach lost -- Josh had just as many flaws as Michael, but Zach let him into their lives, he gave him a chance, he gave him trust and love and it was repaid. Just what Zach could have hoped for with his biological brother, he got from his wife's biological brother. Until Josh turned into Michael... and Zach had to lose another brother that he loved, and he had to find out that his brother was a different kind of monster than Michael, but no less a monster in Zach's eyes. Because Josh betrayed Zach for something as trivial as money. Zach recognized himself and Michael in Josh -- in their upbringing, in their egomaniacal fathers, in their intelligence and their ruthlessness, and he recognized in Josh a need for love, family and acceptance. He gave Josh what no one ever gave him, and it still wasn't enough. Josh betrayed him, and Zach's need to lash out is very understandable. But coming on the heels of so many betrayals... coming on the heels of repetitively being told that his love is not enough... the real Zach Slater came out of hiding.

When Zach loves, it is with his whole heart and his whole soul. Just look at how he has loved in the past: Maureen/Maria, Ethan, Kendall. He has taken abuse from all of them... he has taken more than any man should be expected to take, but still given them back love, loyalty and forgiveness. He has been betrayed by Josh, and has said that Josh isn't family and isn't his brother. I think Zach has to tell himself that as much as he has to say to everyone else. I have more faith in Zach than Kendall or Erica or Ryan. I don't believe that he would have killed Josh... made him pay, made him scared and made him suffer, yes. Killed, no. He said it to Kendall on Tuesday and he proved it when he called off his men today.

That doesn't mean that the real Zach isn't here to stay. I think that's who we'll be seeing... I doubt that we'll see that beautiful soul much. If we are privileged to see moments with the boys, or with Myrtle, we might. But I wouldn't count on it. Zach now has to protect himself from the people who claim to love him... from the people who claim to be his friend... from his wife, his family, his love. Because his wife, his family and his love have betrayed him... over and over again. He fell in love with Kendall for her loyalty and devotion to Greenlee... but he didn't realize that Kendall's true love and devotion go to the drama, and Greenlee supplies that better than anyone else. When Zach is a part of the drama, then her attention is on him. When she was lost after Greenlee left her while pregnant with Spike, he was there... part of the problem and the solution, but definitely involved in the drama as everyone disapproved of him. Then came Mardi Gras and the explosion and Ethan's death... drama surrounding Zach and Kendall drawn to him like a moth to flame. After Kendall's coma, there was Madden's murder to contend with -- more drama and Zach in the middle of it. Then came the Satin Slayer, drama and Zach and Kendall's undivided attention. After that, though, there was quiet family time. Something Zach had yearned for. This solitary soul had opened himself up to Kendall, to her son, and to their son... for the first time in his life he experienced contentment. Only the contentment did not bring drama... so Kendall turned her attention to Greenlee and Ryan and Spike's deafness and never looked away until Zach was lost in a hole. The only time that Zach can hold Kendall's attention is when he is in the center of the drama -- just look at how she treated him while hiding her adultery, but how she smothered him after it was revealed... and despite Zach's repeated entreaties to pay attention to him, to their sons and to their family, she cannot turn herself away from the trainwreck that is Ryan, Annie, Greenlee and Aidan. Except, of course, when Josh's criminal actions put Zach at the center of the drama. A little desk nookie and everything's supposed to be fixed... but real Zach has realized that he cannot hold his wife or her attention without drama. The problem is that Zach doesn't like drama or being in the center of it... and this may be an impasse that cannot be overcome. Kendall must be cured of her drama addiction or her marriage is doomed... and I hate to think what the loss of family and love will do to Zach. I'm pretty sure he's already lost acceptance... after all, the only people who trusted Zach not to kill Josh weren't even on the show. We were sitting out here watching him... knowing him better than anyone that claims to love him has ever bothered.

After all... the writers may change but the rules stay the same... Zach Must Lose.

(And welcome back, Cheri!)

You put your finger on an angle that I had never considered before. Zach is driven to save women, based on his childhood. But Kendall is just as driven to save people - especially if their names are Greenlee and Ryan. Their interests really collided and threw each other into sharp relief today, when Kendall wanted to rip Annie a new one on Greenlee and Ryan's behalf, and Zach's instinct was to support a friend in trouble.

The only kind of dramatic experience Zach really enjoys is a hockey game. Kendall thrives on grandstanding and meddling. She thought Zach was going to march her off home today - like he pulled her away from Fusion recently, to no avail. That wasn't his intention, but if it had been - she wouldn't have stayed. I don't think she ever will. And it's almost hockey season.

I agree with some of your post Cheri, and not with other parts, but this part I quoted because that is why I will NEVER believe that Josh did what they say he did and that the writers would have us believe that he never really cared about Zach/Kendall/Ian and basically they were an means to an end. I SAW those scenes with Josh and Zach and Ian and they were so awesome and real - I shed many a tear over those scenes. This is the problem I have with this storyline -- if they wanted to write Josh off, why didn't they do it like they did Jonathan Lavery, the triple (or is it quadruple) murderer? Just have him ride off into the sunset? Why did they have to massacre the beautiful relationship we saw develop between Zach and Josh and Ian during the Crash storyline? My opinion -- to put Ryass smack in the middle of Zach because that's the only way anyone will watch him. I for one, will now no longer be able to FF Ryass as long as he's in a scene with Zach. Ugh. But I will NEVER like him and I will NEVER think of him as a noble hero. Ever. But it really SUCKS that they want me to believe that Josh betrayed Zach, Kendall, Ian and Erica OFFSCREEN after we saw ONSCREEN how he earned their love and trust. Sorry, I'm not buying. In my universe, Fetus was Framed! That's my story and I'm sticking to it. And I think I'm gonna put that message on my Colin "Shout Out" Shirts from last year at this year's SSW. Heeee!

But Sandi, in one word you put your finger on the reason that Josh got this kind of exit... it's okay to make Jonathon Lavery, Anita Santos, Brooke English, Del Henry, and Ava Benton disappear without a trace or only a brief mention. Jonathon got a Europe mention and Ava got a Hollywood mention, but the others faded into the Martin attic as if they are still somewhere in Pine Valley... just never shown. Josh had pretty much faded away already. His apartment was taken over by the Hubbards, and he was somewhere offstage, working at Camius. That single word -- fetus -- is why Josh was brought back, demonized and then run out of town on a rail.

ABCD let McHack commit several crimes while she was head scribbler. I don't plan on enumerating them all... but Josh Madden was a reminder of two important ones. His existence was a constant reminder that TIIC let her undo groundbreaking, historic television by making him an unabortion. His existence was also a constant reminder that she made Tad Martin an unremoreseful torturer/murder. Letting Josh disappear while the audience considered him a good guy, meant that the audience might still believe he was around somewhere and consider him fondly, even though his very existence reminded us of two things that TIIC need us to forget.

So, they throw out the baby with the bathwater. It is possible to do a retcon that could preserve Josh's relationship with Erica, Kendall,  and Bianca without him remaining an unabortion. But as long as he is thought of fondly, as long as he is liked, then Tad's crime hangs over his head and Josh's presence casts Tad in a poor light and the audience can never forget. Demonize Josh... make him unredeemable and run him out of town... Voila! The unabortion and the torture/murder of Madden are forgotten just like Lily's ill-begotten, look-a-like sister. [/sarcasm]

You only have to look at the dialogue from Thursday to know that is how TIIC think... and to know just how much they believe that we (the audience) can be led around by our noses:

Kendall (to Erica): The only way for Josh to stay safe is if he disappears forever.
Zach (to his employee): As far as I'm concerned, Josh Madden doesn't exist.
Kendall (to Erica): We've got to go on with our lives and forget about him.
Erica (to Kendall): I'm so glad that erasing your brother from your mind will be such a walk in the park for you.
Erica (to Jack): Josh had to leave the country. He's gone. ... He's gone, Jack, he's gone. Maybe forever.

Our job is to listen to the not so subliminal messages from our favorite characters and understand that forgetting Josh, erasing his existence and realizing that it was all just a big mistake is our duty. That way the latest scribbler can move forward without having to deal with McHack Baggage or E&B Luggage on his way to even greater mediocrity.

Despite all this... Zach made sense this week. Even knowing there was an agenda to Josh's erasure, Zach's feelings of betrayal and his pain at being used by Josh were palpable. I take what pleasure I can from this show, and that pleasure all lies in the incomparable performances of TK as Zach. No matter how much nonsense the scripts contain, TK will imbue Zach with humanity, realisim and SENSE... and that has become enough for me. I receive those amazing performances with gratitude. At least one member of AMC treats me with intelligence, interest and compassion and as long as TK is on AMC, I will relish his acknowledgement of my ability to think by his nuanced, intelligent and unforgettable performances.
