9K!  Excellent!    You do a terrific job writing.    I agree with everyone that wants you to write for AMC!  Hey, if you were the writer, everyone would be in favor of Zendall!  LOL    Now that might take more than your writing!

Wow 9K what a place to leave us hanging. How long will we have to wait to find out what happened to Kendall?  Not too long I hope.

Thanks everbody. My story has taken a little detour, I know. But this is the movie I see in my head. So what can I do?" It's nice to have you all along on the journey.

Home for the Holidays

Chapter 12

Zach silently followed the oily little flunkie to the penthouse level of the hotel. He knew Cesar had to have Kendall, and he couldn't conceive of him hurting her. But why was he working so hard to get Zach's attention? While they wouldn't be considered friends, they certainly hadn't been enemies over the years. At least he didn't think so. But that would all change if one hair on Kendall's head had been touched, Zach vowed.

"This way, Mr. Slater," the man said as he opened the door and stepped aside. Zach glanced up to see him disappear down a hallway. He wanted to follow him, to back him into a dark corner and knock some answers loose. He didn't like walking into the unknown. But when he heard Kendall's voice he turned and walked quickly through the open door.

He stopped short as soon as he crossed the threshold, stunned by what he saw. There was his beautiful wife, sitting daintily on the sofa in a rather large, exquisitely furnished room, telling her captor exactly what she thought of him.

"And another thing," she said loudly, "I know exactly who you are, Cesar." She spat his name out as if it left a bad taste in her mouth. She could tell he was shocked by her admission. "Yes, that's right. Zach knows you're here, and he knows exactly where to find me. You can be sure of that. In fact, you've probably got precious little time before he shows up here to take me home. And take you out."

Cesar, a rather large flamboyant man in his late 50's with graying hair and very dark eyes, was staring at her with the blankest expression Zach had ever seen. He couldn't decide if the man was angry, or amused.

"What kind of name is Cesar anyway?" she continued. "Is that your first name, or your last name? Or do you just have the one name, like Cher or ...," she hesitated as she looked him over, "more like Liberace." Zach watched as the muscle in Cesar's jaw twitched, and decided it was time to make his presence known.

"You didn't have to steal my wife just to get me up here, Cesar," he said. "All you had to do was ask." Kendall jumped up to run to her husband but was stopped by the burly bodyguard who stepped into her path. Kendall glared at Zach. Zach glared at Cesar. Cesar nodded to his henchman, who moved away from Kendall. She ran into her husband's arms and held on tight. "I knew you'd find me, Zach," she said loudly. "What took you so long?" she whispered in his ear. "I stopped for lunch," he answered as he moved her behind his back and went to face Cesar. "Stay here."

"So, what's this all about?" he asked as he took a seat on the sofa Kendall had vacated. He sighed heavily when Kendall came to sit next to him, completely ignoring his instructions, just as he knew she would. They both looked to their host, waiting for an explanation.

"Nice to see you again, Zach," Cesar said. "I see you are doing well." He nodded to indicate Kendall. "Beautiful wife. String of successful casinos. Even a precious little step-son to complete the picture." Kendall gasped and grabbed at Zach's arm. But she was too late. Zach was off the couch with his hands around Cesar's throat before the bodyguard could even draw his weapon. "You were saying," Zach ground out through clenched teeth.

"Now, now. Let's all just stay calm," Cesar said weakly. Even though he was fighting for his next breath, he remained eerily relaxed. "I didn't mean any harm." He waved the bodyguard off and waited for Zach to release him. Zach was tired of hearing those words. That's exactly what his stooge had told them the night before. If he didn't mean any harm, then what did he mean? "Stop the mind games and tell me what the hell you want," Zach said angrily.

"This is about nothing more than restitution. Or maybe retribution. That's really more to the point. You took my jewel from me, the thing I valued most in the world. And I want to repay the favor. Fair and square, of course," Cesar said. "Of course," Zach repeated sarcastically. "So what exactly did you have in mind? You want to win your casino back? How? Poker? Blackjack? What?"

"Oh no, Zach. You misunderstand me. I don't want to gamble with you. I've already tried that and came out the loser. I'd be a fool to put myself in that situation again," Cesar said with agonizing calm. Zach was quickly losing his patience. "So what then? Spit it out, damn you!" He had rejoined Kendall on the sofa and was aware that she was holding her breath. He turned to her and brushed his thumb across her cheek. "It's okay, Kendall. Breathe," he said softly. She exhaled and gave him a weak smile before he turned back to the man standing between her and the lunch she never got. Her stomach growled loudly in the quiet room, mortifying her. But nobody seemed to notice.

"So?" Zach repeated. Cesar answered in a voice that was light and casual, as if they were discussing nothing more serious than the weather. "I am going to pay you, handsomely, for a night with your beautiful wife." Zach felt Kendall go rigid next to him, gripping his arm tightly. She took a deep breath, and he knew she was about to go off, but he was unable to move. He was more than speechless, he was paralyzed. He watched as Kendall jumped to her feet and lunged for Cesar, only to be roughly pulled away by the bodyguard. That's what snapped Zach out of his stupor.

He removed the mans hand's from his wife's arms and promptly broke his jaw. Kendall was heading for the door screaming at Zach to follow her when she heard the gun cock. She stopped immediately and turned around to find her husband with a gun to his head. "No!" she screamed. "I'll do it. Just don't hurt Zach." "Like hell," Zach yelled in a voice she'd never heard before. He was beyond angry. But she couldn't let him be killed.

To their mutual surprise, it was Cesar who ended the standoff. He snapped at his bodyguard to holster his weapon and go seek medical attention. "Leave me and the Slaters alone," he said as he escorted the man to the door. He returned to see Zach once again pushing Kendall behind his back. "Zach, Kendall, please," he said calmly. "This has gotten out of hand. It doesn't have to be like this."

"Let me get this straight," Zach began. "You want me to prostitute my own wife? To you? Is that what I heard?" he said in a very low, very dangerous voice. "Dear God, haven't I already seen this movie?" Kendall said. "Perhaps. But I'm offering a lot more money than that," Cesar answered. "You can't offer enough," Zach said. "I get it, Zach. You love your wife. That's okay. It just sweetens the pot," Cesar said, his voice smooth as honey. The look in his eyes turned Zach's stomach.

"Let's go, Kendall," Zach said as he grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the door. Cesar watched them go, knowing what they didn't. The door was locked. He shook his head when Zach turned to stare at him.

"You must deal with me, Zach. I won't let you just walk away." Zach was again speechless. He couldn't believe this was actually happening. "You know I could kill you right now with my bare hands?" Zach said. "There's nobody left to stop me." Cesar reached into his coat and pulled out a handgun. "This will stop you, Zach. But I don't want it to come to that. There's no reason it has to. Please, come back and sit down, both of you."

Kendall looked at Zach, saw his nearly imperceptible nod, and walked with him back to the sofa. She kept pinching herself, trying to wake herself up from this nightmare. But it wasn't working. "You're not dreaming, Kendall," Zach said as he took hold of her hands. "Stop pinching yourself and stay calm. I'll get us out of this. Trust me?" he added softly. She nodded immediately. "Of course," she said, even managing a smile. He squeezed her hands and turned his attention back to Cesar. "Get my wife something to eat," he ordered. It was time for him to take control of this situation and getting Cesar to let his guard down was the first step.

The three of them sat in silence as they waited for room service to be delivered. Then, absurdly, they ate lunch and had the most bizarre conversation Zach had ever been a part of. "Now, let me get this straight," Zach said again, still trying to come to terms with the situation. "You want to sleep with my wife because I won your casino? And you think I'm just going to let you. Are you insane?" he asked, fighting to remain calm.

"You still don't get it, do you Zach? This isn't about losing the casino, it's about losing. Period. It's about having something that means so much to you taken from you and you can't stop it," Cesar said. He got up and walked over to the window. "You will take the money. I'm not giving you any choice. You won't be able to stop it," he said, gesturing for effect. "I want to know that while I'm enjoying the pleasures your wife's body will bring me, you will be somewhere dying inside. You will be picturing my hands all over her body. My lips touching every inch of her soft, silky skin. My-"

"Enough!" Zach growled. He heard Kendall gagging beside him, and watched as she vomited into a large expensive-looking vase in the corner. He gave her a glass of water and a hug before returning his attention to Cesar. "None of that is going to happen. Ever. And I won't sit here and listen to you talk about her that way. Now what I need to know is what it will take for me and my wife to walk out of here. Right now. Am I going to have to kill you, Cesar? Because I will."

"Ah Zach, and here I thought you were a man of the world. What I'm suggesting isn't so uncommon, is it?" Cesar asked. "I don't care what the world does, and I sure as hell don't care what you think," Zach said. "Just answer the damn question." He sat with his arm around Kendall's waist, letting her lean on him, keeping her close.

Cesar stared at Zach for a long moment. "Okay. I do have an alternate plan - Plan B, if you will," he said coyly. "Go on," Zach said impatiently. "And it better be good, or we've got a real problem." "Oh, I think you'll agree much more readily to this one," Cesar said. "It will come down to another game of chance. One game of five-card stud." "And the stakes?" Zach asked. "Your wife against my casino ... this casino."

"I will not wager my wife, Cesar!" Zach repeated loudly. "Get that through your head. My God, you really are insane," he said when it became obvious he wasn't getting through to him. "You don't have a choice, Zach. That's what you refuse to understand. I'm in control of this situation, not you," Cesar said as he waved the gun at Zach.

"A casino? That's what this is all about? We'll play for the casino then, not Kendall," Zach said, suddenly hopeful. That made more sense. Surely Cesar could see that. "You haven't been paying attention, Zach," Cesar began. "It's too late for that. You have other casinos. It would cost you nothing. I want you to pay a high price. And Kendall is that price." He actually had the nerve to walk over to Kendall and attempt to touch her. Zach stood in front of her, making it impossible. The look in his eyes dared Cesar to try again. "Don't worry, Zach. I won't hurt her. I only want to hurt you. Her pleasure will be your pain."

"I'll give you back the casino, Cesar. Hell, I'll give you all of them. But you won't go near my wife. You know that's not going to happen. You'll have to kill me first," Zach said. He looked at Kendall who looked pale, but defiant. "You'll have to kill us both. Either way, you won't get what you want."

Cesar seemed to consider Zach's words. "Okay. Plan C. We will change the stakes. I'll agree to leave your wife out of it, although I am sorely disappointed," he said as he let his eyes travel the length of Kendall's body. He held up his hand when he heard the low rumble in Zach's throat. "No need to get all riled up, Zach. I have conceded. The game will now be strictly business. My casinos for yours. Winner take all."

Zach was relieved. This was a piece of cake. He knew he could beat Cesar with his eyes closed. "That's the difference between us, Cesar. For you, poker is a game of chance. For me, it's a game of skill. You've got yourself a deal," Zach said. He offered his hand to Cesar, who shook it enthusiastically.

"Then it's settled. We'll set the game up for tonight. That gives you a few hours to get Kendall ready. Of course, I can't let you leave this room. But you're free to talk amongst yourselves," Cesar said. He was rubbing his hands together, as if he had Zach right where he wanted him. Kendall was confused. Zach was angry, mostly at himself. "What the hell are you talking about? Get Kendall ready for what?" he asked, although he already knew the answer.

"Oh, didn't I mention it?" Cesar said smugly. "I won't be playing against you. I'll be playing against your lovely wife."

Damn you are good!  LOL  9K, another excellent chapter!  I can see the handwriting on the wall now!  There is no way in Hell that Cesar is going to win!  But I'm excited to see how you will take us to that place.  But I feel sadness too.  Does this mean the last chapter is getting near?

9K, it is like you've grown into a friend and soon I will have to say good bye.  I sure hope it won't be for long.  I really, really DO love your writings!

Home for the Holidays

Chapter 13

"I'm sorry, what did you say?" Kendall asked, her voice thin and her eyes wide. "You heard correctly, Mrs. Slater," Cesar answered smugly. "It shall be just the two of us. Good heavens, you aren't going to faint on me, are you?" he said when Kendall sat down carefully. "Hardly," she spat. She looked up at Zach, who looked ready to kill. She knew he was blaming himself for not seeing it coming, but she also knew how foolish that was. She gave his hand a squeeze, silently pleading with him to have faith. To her surprise, he actually smiled. "You think so little of my wife's abilities?" Zach said to Cesar, who looked her over thoroughly before answering. "Oh no, I have no doubt that she has many skills, Zach," he began. But Zach's fist in his stomach effectively stopped his words. He doubled over and waited for the air to return to his lungs. Suddenly nauseous, now he was the one who needed to sit down. "Okay, I guess I deserved that. But, deserving or not, if you hit me again, I won't hesitate to use this," he said, flashing the gun.

"You were warned," Zach said as he took a seat next to Kendall. "And if you so much as breathe in Kendall's direction again, you'll need that gun. You're a fool, Cesar. In more ways than one." Cesar stared at him for a moment before responding. "Enlighten me," he said at last. "Don't you know what goes on in your own casino?" Zach asked. "Kendall," he said as he took her hand, "cleaned you out just last night." Cesar waved his hand at Zach. "I am well aware of that. But that was against tourists and housewives. She didn't beat me, Zach. And she wasn't playing Five Card Stud." He laughed maniacally as he walked over to the desk and picked up the phone. "Set it up," he said. "We'll be down in an hour.

-------------------------

Zach and Kendall were escorted into a private gaming room where Cesar was already waiting. Although Cesar had left them alone for the past hour, he'd made sure they were not given any privacy. The three armed guards insured that. The Slaters were forced to sit on opposite sides of the room, making it impossible to plan a strategy. All they could do was silently reassure each other that things would work out. Zach was reminded of the night they'd spent playing Five Card Stud in their bedroom just before leaving for Monte Carlo. Kendall had proven herself to be a quick learner and she definitely had the heart of a warrior. He had complete confidence in her. He just hoped she had confidence in herself.

"Ah, you're here. Right on time," Cesar said breezily. He was more than confident. He was overconfident. And Zach wasn't a fool. He took in his surroundings. Cesar was sitting with his back to the corner, leaving Kendall to sit opposite him, with her back to the door. There was little adornment to the room, just a huge framed print on the wall behind Kendall, and a large potted palm just beyond her right shoulder. The dealer was already in place, waiting for Cesar to give him the go ahead.

Zach pulled up a chair next to Kendall, but was stopped. "Oh no, Zach. I can't let you sit there," Cesar said. "Poker is not a team sport. Your lovely wife will have to do this alone. You can't coach her, and you won't be allowed to see her cards You will see what I see. You are merely a spectator. Fair and square, remember?" "Fair and square. Right." Zach walked over to Cesar. "Let's start with this," he said as he pulled the earpiece from Cesar's ear. "Out!" he said to the two goons hovering in the doorway. And close the door behind you." Then he took the earpiece and crushed it under his heel.

"Kendall, why don't you see if you can find the camera hidden in the plant behind you," he said, watching Cesar closely. The man had the nerve to looked disgruntled when Kendall placed the small device on the table. "Is that all?" he asked, eying Zach angrily. "Nope," Zach answered cheerily. He wanted to laugh. He couldn't believe Cesar was really so naive. "Sweetheart," he said as he took Kendall's hand, "can I get you to stand up please." When he had moved her to the other side of the room, he picked up an ashtray and busted the glass on the picture hanging behind her chair.

"Now are you finished?" Cesar asked impatiently. "This is all too ridiculous, Zach. I didn't know you were so suspicious." "Maybe you should have. Then you wouldn't look like such a fool right now," Zach replied. He moved Kendall's chair away from the glass and went to sit between her and Cesar. He reached across the table and removed all the cards from the dealer's stack. "We're gonna need new cards. Sealed decks," he said to Cesar, who simply nodded to the dealer. "Okay, now we're ready," Zach said after inspecting the new decks.

"Before we get started, I'd like to suggest a rule change," Cesar said. "In an effort to have the game last a little longer, why don't we agree that each player is allowed to fold once. That could push us to three games. Won't that be thrilling?" he said, clearly convinced he had the upper hand. Zach looked at Kendall. She looked cool and confident on the outside, but he could see in her eyes how nervous she was on the inside. "What do you think, Kendall?" he asked. "It's your decision." She looked him in the eye, took a deep breath and nodded. "It's okay with me," she said.

Cesar proved to be a real enigma. Kendall had spent much of the day with the man, and he'd said relatively little. But as soon as the first card was dealt, he turned into a real Chatty Cathy. He was rambling about the weather, the Royal Family of Monaco, and anything else he could think of. It was disarming, to say the least. Kendall knew it was probably just a strategy to keep her off balance, so she tried to ignore him. She was forced to fold the first hand. She looked nervously at Zach, who winked at her.

"So, Cesar," Zach said as they waited for the second hand to be dealt, "how many casinos do you have now? Just how much am I expanding my empire tonight?" Cesar glanced over at him briefly before returning his piercing gaze to Kendall. "I have six casinos going into this game. I will have 14 when I come out. I must say, I can't wait to see Pine Valley. May I pay you a visit when I arrive?" Zach nodded. "Sure, why not. Maybe we'll even give you a job dealing at our casino," he said.

Cesar laughed good-naturedly, then continued with his barrage of silly small talk. As the second hand was beginning, he began a monologue on the finer points of Frank Sinatra's cinematic career. Kendall started to roll her eyes, but didn't want to give Cesar the satisfaction. "Ah, Mrs. Slater,"  he said as her third card was dealt, "how are you holding up? You look calm, but I wonder if it's all an act." "I'm great, thanks for asking," she responded with a smile. "Guess you'll just have to keep wondering."

She looked over at Zach, who wouldn't make eye contact with her. He kept glancing away. And she noticed he was biting his lip. She started to panic. What was he thinking? What was she missing? "Zach?" she asked. "You're awfully quiet. Are you okay?" He looked at her then, his eyes boring through her. "Me? No, I'm captivated," he said.

Kendall's mind went reeling back in time. She remembered the last time he'd said those words to her. She'd gone to him for advice about how to know when she was being lied to. The tell! Zach was reminding her to look for the tell. She glanced at him, then returned her attention to Cesar. "Kendall, can you see Cesar's cards? Are you close enough?" Zach asked, emphasizing the last part. Her mind went back to that morning's walk on the beach. God, it seemed like such a long time ago. Zach had told her about winning his first casino from Cesar. He'd told her about his tell. But what was it? Shakespeare! It was Shakespeare. He quoted Shakespeare when he was bluffing. Kendall sighed with relief.

She watched as Cesar's third card was dealt. She had nothing, not even a decent high card. But he didn't appear to either. She had the highest card showing so far, but she wasn't confident that it would hold up. So she waited. She couldn't fold, that would be a forfeit. All she could do was hope Cesar would fold, or draw a worse hand than hers. He looked up at her after seeing his fourth card. "So, Kendall, are you in or out? The readiness is all, my dear," he said. She wanted to smile, but didn't dare. She looked at Zach and knew he was reading her thoughts. She saw the smile in his eyes. "No, Cesar, I'm in." She took her final card and smiled on the inside. She now had a weak pair. Hopefully it would be enough to win if he didn't fold.

"Still in?" he asked, desperation creeping into his voice. "Yep," she said. He cursed under his breath, and folded. "Well, that was close," he said with false confidence. He was scared and Kendall could see it. "Last chance," he said to Kendall. "This could all end right now. You and I go up to my penthouse and spend one glorious night together, and I make your husband a much richer man. All you have to do is say the word." "What word do you want to hear, Cesar?" Kendall said. "Never? How about ewwwwwwww? Or is that even a word? How about hell no? Wait, that's two words. Zach, what word do you think he's looking for?" she said.

"Morgue? Pain? Death? Funeral? Eunuch?" Zach said, looking at Cesar. "Hear anything you like? My personal favorite is -" "Okay, okay. Enough. So you two are committed to giving me your casinos. Fine. Let's just get on with it," Cesar said. He nodded at the dealer who began the third and final game. Kendall noticed that Cesar had begun to sweat profusely. Zach noticed that Kendall was too cool to sweat. He was so proud of her. No matter what happened, he would have her and Spike, and that was all he would ever need.

Kendall checked her first card and was thrilled to see a queen. It seemed prophetic to her. When her third card was another queen, she knew the game was hers. She fought hard to school her features. She watched, calmly, as Cesar drew a king. Her confidence faded a little. If his first, hidden, card was a king, she was in trouble. She started to pay much greater attention to his chatter, praying Shakespeare would make an appearance.

"Why, Kendall, I haven't even asked you about your mother. What is it like to have Erica Kane for a mother?" Cesar asked. He wasn't just confident, he was cocky. His fourth card was not a king, so she breathed a little easier. "She's my mother, for heaven's sake. Am I gonna tell you she's awful? She's Erica Kane. Trust me, that says it all," Kendall said. "It's a good daughter who speaks so diplomatically about her mother," Cesar replied. "Thou art as wise as thou art beautiful," he added, raising his glass to her.

Kendall wanted to dance. That's it, she thought. No second king. Just a lot of 17th-century hot air. She looked at Zach, who was smiling shamelessly. They had Cesar now. If he folded, he lost. If he stayed in and called, he lost. Either way, Kendall thought, he was a big, fat L-O-S-E-R.

"Last chance to fold," Cesar warned as Kendall received her final card. "Tell you what," he said magnanimously, "I'm willing to let you off the hook. For old time's sake," he said, turning to Zach. "You fold now, and I'll only take back the casino that you won from me all those years ago. You can keep the rest." Kendall laughed. She couldn't keep it in any longer. "Fat chance, Liberace. This B-movie farce is over. Read 'em and weep," she said as she showed her pair of queens. She watched as Cesar paled. "Good heavens, you're not going to faint on me, are you?" she asked. She stood to her feet and jumped into the waiting arms of her husband. "I guess this means our suite will be comped."

-------------------------

Kendall stepped out of the tub and wrapped herself in a towel. She knew she'd kept Zach waiting a long time, but after the tense afternoon she'd had, a long soak was just what she needed. Besides, he'd been the one to suggest it. It was finally over. She and Zach were now the proud owners of six more casinos scattered all over the world. And Cesar was gone. He tucked his sleazy tail between his legs and got the hell out of Dodge as soon as the paperwork was signed. "Good riddance," Kendall said aloud.

She slipped into something slinky and ran her fingers through her hair. "Good enough," she said as she turned out the light. She knew she'd be lucky to get through dinner still wearing it, so what did it matter? She opened the door carefully, just in case Zach was napping, but immediately heard his voice. She stopped to listen, unable to believe what she was hearing. He was telling someone a story about a princess and a ... goalie?

She hurried into the room to find him talking on the telephone. His voice was soft and low, but still carried in the quiet room. "Zach?" she said as she sat beside him on the bed. "Who are you talking to?" He kissed his finger and pressed it against her lips. "Our son," he mouthed. Kendall sat, stunned, while he finished the story. After telling Spike goodnight, he handed the phone to Kendall. "The boy misses his mom," he said.

Kendall felt the tears that had been gathering in her eyes start to roll down her face. She took the phone and listened to her son's breathing and began to sob. She missed him so much, but was too emotional to even speak. Zach took the phone from her and kissed her softly. "Mom will call you tomorrow," he said. Then he was talking to someone else.

"Did it work?" he asked. "Great. No problem. Glad to help. Kendall will call you tomorrow. Goodbye." Then he turned to his beautiful wife and wrapped his arms around her. "Don't worry about it, he was asleep anyway. You'll talk to him tomorrow." She kissed his neck as he held her close and rocked her. "Some day, huh?" he asked when she raised her head from his shoulder. "You hungry?" Then he laughed. "Look who I'm asking," he said.

Zach led her out to the balcony of the hotel suite that they now owned. They took in the beautiful skyline while the gentle night breezes blew over them. Kendall was not surprised to see that Zach had taken care of everything. Candles, music, flowers. And food. He was right, she was starving!

"So what's on the schedule for tomorrow," Kendall asked between bites. "Any small countries you want to take over?" She looked up to see Zach considering it. "No ... well, maybe ... um, we'll talk about it later. "Actually, I thought we might go on a little shopping trip," he said, watching her closely. Her eyes lit up, just as he knew they would. "Shopping for what?" she asked. "Chocolate," he answered. He now had her undivided attention.

"Did you say chocolate?" she asked, suddenly breathless. "No. You couldn't have. Did you?" "Uh huh?" he answered. "Where?" she stammered. "Why? Chocolate you said?" Zach laughed as he took her hand. "Yes, Kendall, you heard me. Where is up to you. There's Belgium. They're famous for their chocolate. Or Switzerland. Anywhere you want." He kissed her palm and watched her eyes dance. "And why should be obvious. It makes you do crazy things, remember? Besides, it's almost National Chocolate-Covered Anything Day and we don't want to be caught unprepared," he said, flashing her a wicked grin. "Is there really such a thing," she asked. "Check your calendar," was all he said.

"Are you sure you're up for it?" she teased, "the trip I mean." She was running her hand up his arm, meeting his gaze. Zach wondered if she even realized she was licking her lips. "Oh, I'm up for it. And the trip, too," he said. He grabbed her hands and hauled her to her feet. "I think it's time to go to bed," he said as he pulled her into his arms. She yawned loudly. "Yep, I think you're right. I'm really tired." "No you're not," he said softly.

He moved in to kiss her, but stopped just before their lips touched. He pulled back a little and looked at her, his beautiful wife. Here she was open, willing, waiting for him to kiss her, as if it was his gift to her. When, in reality, he felt like he was the one given the gift. He was the one doing the taking. He felt so humbled. And so proud. He wanted nothing more than to give this woman the world.

Kendall opened her eyes to find him staring at her intently. "Zach?" she said, but he didn't seem to hear her. She leaned into him, bringing their lips together. He took it from there.

Lady, how good can you be?  This story is too good for words.  Maybe you'll give us more??  Yea, I'm sure you will, and probably just as good or better.  Thanks, again I had a good bedtime story--something to dream on!

9K...I loved this chapter.  So many good things in it...how in synch with each other Zach and Kendall are, Kendall remembering what Cesar's tell was, and so many references to scenes we've all seen and loved on the show itself.  Just wonderful!

This has to be my favorite, though...I burst out laughing when I read it.  It's just so..so...very Zach.  LOL

And National Chocolate Covered Anything Day?  Priceless.  I'm sure Zach will remember that Kendall is a "milk chocolate girl".

Thanks for another great chapter...hope there are many more to come.

Thanks, Granny ...and everybody else. No plot breaking out in this chapter, just happy Zen. The chocolate thing is a bit of an inside joke, but it is a real holiday. Enjoy.

Home for the Holidays

Chapter 14

"Paris! What a great idea," Kendall gushed as she and Zach made their way down the Champs Elysees. "Well, it was on the way," Zach said casually. Kendall shook her head in disbelief. He acted like they were stopping off for milk on their way home from work. They were, in fact, stopping off in Paris on their way to Belgium. After all, where else would one go to get the finest chocolate? They couldn't celebrate National Chocolate-Covered Anything Day with anything less than the best.

"Oh, Zach," Kendall said as she hurried to look into one of the shop windows. "How beautiful is that dress?" He never took his eyes from Kendall's face. "Too beautiful for words," he replied. She looked at him and smiled. "Care to come inside with me and take a closer look?" she asked. He looked her up and down before answering. "Sure. I'm aching for a closer look. But I won't sit on one of those little stools outside the dressing rooms. And I won't hold your purse," he said emphatically.

"You don't have to sit outside, you can come in and help me with the buttons," she said coyly. He ran his fingers along her collarbone and down to the first button on her shirt. She stopped him just before he popped open the first button. "Not here," she said as she took his hand and pulled him inside. "And I don't need a purse, my husband is paying."

Kendall walked right up to the first saleswoman she saw and pointed to the dress in the window. She tried to tell the woman what she wanted, but her French was beyond terrible. The lady just looked at her and gave her that condescending "dumb Americans" smile that she'd seen repeatedly over the last two days. Zach watched the scene unfold, amused. Then he turned to the saleswoman and rattled off something in rapid French that Kendall couldn't keep up with. The lady gave Zach an approving look that Kendall did not appreciate, before asking him a question. They both turned to look at Kendall, who instinctively moved closer to Zach. "Just what the hell is she saying to you?" she asked. "Is Frenchie here coming on to my husband right under my nose?" Zach answered the woman's question and put his arm around Kendall's waist, pulling her up against his side.

The lady turned, gave Kendall a slight bow and hurried off to the racks. "She was just asking your size," Zach said. "Looked like she was more interested in your size to me," Kendall said, clearly annoyed. "Jealous?" Zach asked in her ear. "You're damn right I am. I don't like all these foreign floozies cozying up to you. Especially when I don't know what they're saying," Kendall pouted. Zach kissed the pout away and then they followed the saleswoman to the dressing room.

Being an exclusive, high-end boutique, there were no rows of changing room stalls. There were only two rooms, rather large in size, separated by a small alcove. The lady hung Kendall's dress, and several others she thought Kendall might like, inside the first room and turned to find the couple standing there, waiting for her to leave. She spoke to Zach, shaking her head and motioning him to follow her.

He didn't move a muscle. When she got to the door and realized he wasn't with her, she wagged her finger at him and started to argue. The conversation between them was too fast for Kendall to follow completely, but she got the gist. The lady wanted Zach to wait outside, and he was refusing. He reached into his wallet, pulled out a credit card, and said one final word: "commission." Then he made himself comfortable on a settee across the room. The lady muttered something haughtily and left in a snit. "Well, I guess that didn't need a translation," Kendall said. She locked the door and then went to stand directly in front of Zach, who had taken off his coat and was loosening his tie.

"What are you doing, Zach?" Kendall laughed. "You are just here to help me with the buttons, remember?" He grabbed her and pulled her down on his lap. "You might need me to do more," he said as he began slowly unbuttoning her shirt. "And I just want to be ready."

-------------------------

"Are you sure about this, Kendall?" Zach asked as they walked through the door of the ritzy Champneys Spa in the heart of Brussels, Belgium. "I don't like the looks of this place," he said as he eyed the waiting patrons suspiciously. "Where are the men?" Kendall grabbed his hand to keep him from bolting. "They're all in the sports bar in the back, I'm sure," Kendall said. "I'm kidding, Zach," she added quickly when his eyes lit up with hope. "Come on, you said you'd to this with me." "No, as I recall, I said you could do it. I never said I would," he countered, still not moving from the doorway.

"You told me on New Year's Eve that you would do anything with me," she said with a bit of a whine. "Remember?" He looked at her for a long minute, and finally smiled. "That's low, Kendall," he said. "Desperate times call for desperate measures," she said in a sing-song voice. "It'll be fun," she added. "Fun. Right," he said, eyeing her. "I'll go in, but I'm not making any promises." She kissed him on the cheek "Fair enough."

They made their way to the counter and Kendall told Zach what she wanted him to say. He looked at her like she'd lost her mind. "Oh man, you are gonna owe me big for this," he said in a low voice. "Don't I always deliver, Zach?" she asked sweetly, linking her arm with his. "Mmmm hmmm," he said. "Are you sure about this?" "Yes, Zach! We're doing this. Just tell her what we want," she said, trying hard not to laugh. He was so cute when he was disgruntled. She watched the lady's face as Zach dictated to her exactly what they were interested in. She seemed surprised.

"What's the problem?" Kendall asked Zach when the conversation stopped. "No problem," he said. "She just thinks it's odd that you want all of their chocolate treatments. She says people usually just do one or two." "Did you tell her that tomorrow is National Chocolate-Covered Anything Day?" Kendall asked. "Yes, I did. She said that was an American holiday." "And what did you say?" Kendall prodded. "I told her we were Americans." "Whip out your credit card and let's get this show on the road," Kendall said, growing more and more impatient.

"Does anybody here speak English?" she said loudly when things didn't move fast enough. "I do," Zach said beside her. She laughed. "Okay, okay. So I'm overreacting. Just tell her to book it and point us in the right direction." Within minutes she and Zach were ushered into two separate rooms where they were to change into plush white robes. Zach arched an eyebrow at Kendall and disappeared into one of the rooms.

Three hours later they were led into a room with two huge tubs filled with what appeared to be hot cocoa. There were attendants waiting for them, as had been the case all afternoon. Kendall had been subjected to a chocolate mint body scrub, a chocolate fondue body wrap, a chocolate fantasy pedicure, and a cocoa massage. Zach refused to submit to anything but the massage, but he wouldn't let Kendall out of his sight. "I like to watch," he'd told the attendants in every room they'd entered. He flashed Euros and a devastating smile, and they bent the rules.

"Now this is more like what I had in mind," Zach said. "Only there was only one tub and a lot more privacy. Not that it's a deal breaker," he continued, looking at Kendall. "The tubs?" she said. "The privacy," he replied. "Does that mean you'll take the whipped cocoa bath plunge with me?" she asked. "Come on, Zach," she begged when he hesitated. She stood closer and opened the neckline of her robe. "Here, smell this," she said, tilting her head back. He enthusiastically complied, burying his face in her neck.

"What do you smell?" she asked, trying to pull him away from her before they both made fools of themselves in front of the spa employees. "Chocolate-covered Kendall," he growled. "And what if I want to enjoy chocolate-covered Zach," she said. He growled again, finally pulling himself away from her. "Okay. You win. But only if you promise to enjoy chocolate-covered Zach as soon as we get back to our hotel." "Deal," she giggled as she drug him to the tubs.

-------------------------

"Wow!" Zach said softly as Kendall emerged from the bathroom. After an afternoon of pampering, they'd visited some of the finest chocolatiers in Belgium. Leonidas, Suchard, and Guylian boxes littered their room. Now they were supposed to be on their way out to dinner, but Kendall obviously had other plans. She was wearing a silk nightgown, chocolate brown of course, that stopped mid-thigh. She turned around so Zach could get the full view, revealing a mostly-bare back.

"So I guess we're eating in?" Zach said as he removed his coat. "I believe I was promised chocolate-covered Zach for dinner," Kendall said, coming forward to remove his tie. "I just assumed it would be served here. But if you really want to go-" Her words were cut off by his kiss. She liberated him from his shirt and rained kisses across his chest.

"Zach," she teased, "I don't taste chocolate." He reached over and picked up a silver bowl from the table. "Well," he said as he removed the lid to reveal a bowl full of melted chocolate. "I was saving this for dessert, but...." He dipped his finger into the bowl and rubbed it across his lips. Kendall pounced on him, devouring both him and the chocolate. Then she sucked his finger into her mouth. She watched his eyes close and his felt his heartbeat quicken as she licked all the chocolate from his finger.

"Mmmmmmm ... milk chocolate. My favorite," she said when he opened his eyes and looked at her. Then she turned toward the bed, calling over her shoulder, "bring the bowl."

Oh my...chocolate covered Zach.  I was so caught up in reading this latest chapter I didn't even realize I was eating one of those sugar free chocolate fudgesicles until I reached the chocolate covered Zach part.  Another wonderful chapter, 9K...although if you keep up these strong visuals, I'm not sure I'm going to survive until the end of the story.

Okay girls, who puts the "Happy" in "Happy Holidays?

Home for the Holidays

Chapter 15

"Be it ever so humble," Zach said as he and Kendall pulled into their driveway. "Why are we stopping here first?" Kendall asked. "I wanna go get Spike." "I know, honey. I do too. But we're right on the way to Ryan's," Zach said as he dropped the suitcases he was carrying and stepped forward to unlock the front door. "Just give me five minutes. Besides, it will give you time to call Lavery and make sure he's home." Kendall brightened. "Actually," she said, pointing at him, "that a good idea. You have five minutes." She softened her demand with a kiss, then waited while he unlocked the door. "Surprise!"

Zach and Kendall looked up to see Ryan, Spike, Bianca and Miranda standing in the foyer underneath a large banner reading "Welcome Home Mommy & Daddy Zach." Everyone except Ryan wore a party hat, and Miranda was holding a balloon bouquet. "How did you guys know?" Kendall cried as she ran to her son, dropping a large shopping bag at Bianca's feet. "Zach, did you do this?" she asked, turning to find him right behind her. Before he could answer, Ryan did. "Spike told us," he said. "I just assumed you told him." Kendall laughed as she fought her husband for Spike's kisses. Zach was right. There was no place like home.

------------------------

"Okay, that was the easy part," Bianca said, glancing at Ryan. "Now for the bad news." They had all moved to the kitchen to enjoy a piece of "birthday cake" as Miranda called it. Bianca had explained that her daughter thought any cake that came from a bakery was birthday cake. Kendall was giving Spike a bottle while Zach, Miranda in his lap, finished off a second piece. The looks being exchanged between Ryan and Bianca were beginning to make him nervous.

"Out with it," he said at last, wiping icing from Miranda's face. "Well," Bianca hedged, "you're not going to like it, and I did try to stop it, but she insisted." Kendall's mouth fell open. "She?" she said. "Oh God, what did Mom do?" Kendall looked over at Zach, knowing he wasn't going to be pleased. "She planned a party, for tonight, with you two as the guests of honor," Bianca said in a rush. "Surprise," Ryan said weakly. "Oh God, Kendall murmured. "Sounds like fun," Zach said cheerily.

Zach looked up to see everyone staring at him. "What? She's your mother, Kendall," he said. "You might enjoy yourself." Bianca and Ryan were looking at Zach with their mouths open. They couldn't believe he was so willing to spend the evening with Erica Kane. Kendall knew better. "What do you mean I might enjoy myself. Don't you mean we?" she asked. Zach feigned innocence. "No. Bianca said two guests of honor. That's you and Spike. I'm sure I'm not invited. Right?" he said, turning to look at his sister-in-law.

"Oh no you don't, Zach Slater!" Kendall said loudly, handing Spike off to Ryan. "If I have to go, you're coming with me." Zach held up his hands defensively. "Erica won't care if I'm there or not. Just tell her you pushed me off the Eiffel Tower. Her best Christmas ever, guaranteed," he said. Everybody laughed except Kendall. "Come on, Kendall, take one for the team," Zach begged. "Remember? Team Slater?" Kendall shook her head. "No way, coach," she said firmly. "We're all in this together."

"Unless..." Kendall began. Bianca immediately started to protest. "I know what you're thinking, Kendall. And it won't work. I already told you I tried to stop it. But you know how our mother is when her mind is made up." Kendall nodded. "How did she know we'd be home today?" Kendall asked, eyeing Ryan. He backed up a step before answering. "She calls me ten times a day, Kendall. How's Spike? Have you heard from Kendall? Is Zach still with her? When are they coming home? I admit it," he said with a shrug, "I cracked." "But," Bianca interrupted, "he did buy you some time. Mom thinks you won't be home until tonight. So you at least have the rest of the afternoon to relax before she descends upon you." "On her broom, no doubt," Zach muttered.

"What's in the bag, Kendall?" Bianca asked in an effort to change the subject. She peeked into the bag that she had brought in from the foyer and was surprised to find it filled with boxes of chocolate. She looked at Kendall, who appeared to be blushing. "What's all this?" she asked. Kendall took the bag from her and put it on the table next to Zach. "We got it in Belgium," she said, trying to sound casual. She gave it up when she saw the look on Bianca's face. "Busted," she said softly, hoping at least Ryan was in the dark. "But oh my God, Binx, it just melts in your mouth," she said as she turned to look at Zach. He dropped the cup he was holding and grinned up at her.

"What?" Ryan said. "I don't get it." Kendall and Bianca just smiled while Zach cleaned up the coffee he'd spilled. "Come on, guys. What did I miss?" he repeated. "A lot," Zach said, "unlike Kendall. She didn't miss a drop." He smiled at his blushing bride and her blushing sister. He walked over and whispered in Kendall's ear. Bianca didn't hear what he said, but she did notice Kendall's knees buckle slightly. "Okay, Ryan. I think it's time for us to go. Come on Miranda," she said as she headed toward the door. "See you guys tonight," she said over her shoulder. "Enjoy your afternoon."

"Alone at last," Zach said as he gathered Kendall into his arms. "Well, not quite," he added as he looked over at their sleeping son. "Tell you what," Kendall began, "why don't I take Spike up to bed and you can wait for me right here." She gave him a quick kiss and tried to step out of his arms, but he wouldn't release her. "Here?" he asked as he pulled her closer and gave her a real kiss. "Right here?" he asked, kissing her ear. "On this very spot?" he asked, moving to her neck.

She put her hands on his chest and backed him up against the counter. "Uh huh," she said under her breath, moving to give him better access to her throat. "That very spot." Then she reached behind her and took his hands in hers. "Kiss me, Zach," she said, drawing his attention back to her mouth. He did as she asked with skill and enthusiasm. When she had him right where she wanted him, she dropped his hands and stepped away from him quickly. "Wait for me," she said breathlessly as she picked up Spike and hurried from the room to the sound of him growling.

------------------------

"Zach? Where are you?" Kendall had managed to put Spike down for a nap and change into something more comfortable in a matter of minutes, only to find her husband missing. He wasn't in the kitchen where she'd left him. He wasn't on the porch, in the living room, or even in his den. "Oh no," she gasped. "Surely not." She ran to the room they both used as an office. There was plenty of room in the house for two offices, but they both liked the idea of sharing the space. But she wasn't ready for him to go in there. Not yet.

She rounded the corner and found him standing in the middle of the room, staring at the wall. He was speechless. She walked over to stand beside him and he immediately took her hand. "Do you like it?" she asked. She had hoped he wouldn't see it until closer to Christmas, but there he was, taking in every inch of the mural she'd had painted while they were in Europe. It was a history of the Detroit Red Wings, done in a timeline. She had to admit, it was beautifully done. But there was no way she could know if it was accurate.

"Zach?" she said. "Did he get everything right?" He turned to her then and the look on his face took her breath away. He looked like a kid on Christmas morning. "It's perfect," he said at last. "Just like my beautiful wife." He pulled her into his arms and kissed her. She could feel the excitement in him. "Tell me about it," she said when he released her. He pulled a chair into the middle of the room and settled her in his lap. Then he started at the beginning and told her the significance of every scene depicted. She didn't understand most of it, but his excitement was contagious. Until he got to the very end. That's when he saw it. The last scene included a view of the stands. And seated there amongst the spectators was Team Slater wearing matching jerseys.

Zach stood up and walked over to the mural, actually running his fingers over the faces of Kendall and Spike. He gave Kendall a big smile, but she could see tears in his eyes. "I can't believe you did this, Kendall," he said. "It's the best gift I've ever gotten, except for you and Spike." He kissed her again, then carried her back to the chair in the middle of the room. They sat there for a long time, her in his lap, just looking at it. He went back and forth between explanation and stunned silence. She fell asleep in his arms, listening to the sound of his voice, feeling his breath on her ear.

"Zach! Here you are. I've been looking everywhere for you. What on earth are you doing in here? And on my mother's bed?" Kendall walked into Erica's bedroom and closed the door behind her. Her husband was sitting on the bed, propped up by a pile of pillows. Kendall followed his gaze to the television screen. "Sports? You came in here to watch sports?" she said incredulously. She knew she should be annoyed with him for ditching her, but instead she just wanted to laugh. She couldn't help but picture the look on her mother's face if she walked in and caught him there.

"No," he said, "I came him here to get away from everybody. It just so happens that I was lucky enough to find ESPN2 replaying the World Series. You know the Cardinals beat Detroit, don't you?" "Yes, of course I do. Won't we all always remember where we were when the Cardinals beat Detroit?" she said sarcastically. "Let's get out of here before we get caught."

He laughed. "Scares you, huh? We're not kids, Kendall. And we're not doing anything wrong. Not yet, anyway. Why don't you come over her and maybe we will," he teased. "Why don't you get up and come downstairs with me?" she countered. "You first." She sighed heavily and went to sit gingerly on the bed beside him. "What's that?" he said. "You aren't scared of me are you?" She laughed then and allowed herself to be pulled into his arms. "One kiss," he said against her lips. "One kiss," she agreed.

So he kissed her. And kissed her. And kissed her. His lips never left hers and he wouldn't let her break the kiss. Until she bit him. When he gasped, she pulled away. "Okay, that was your one kiss. Time to go," she gloated. She realized when she stood that the kiss had affected her more than she'd realized. He was smugly satisfied to see her staggering to the door. He laughed, jumped off the bed and followed her back to the party from hell.

-------------------------

"Really, Zach. Why the hat?" Erica snapped when she saw Spike's beret. She had been complaining about it all night, but she had been roundly ignored. "It's not a hat. It's a beret. And all the handsome young playboys in Paris are wearing them," Zach said cheerily. "The boy looks great." Erica snorted. "Well we're not in Paris, Zach," she sniffed. "No," Zach replied as he looked over his head, "but we are under the mistletoe, Mom. How about-" he began, but stopped when his mother-in-law walked off in a snit."

A little while later, Kendall watched from across the room as Zach weaved his way through the crowd, drink in hand, talking loudly and running into people. Luckily, Bianca had taken Spike upstairs with Miranda. Otherwise, she was sure he'd be pretty bruised by now. She saw Zach pick up a very expensive ceramic leopard that belonged to her mother. He turned it over in his hand and nearly dropped it. She hurried over to him and gently removed it from his grasp.

"Zach, honey, what are you doing?" she said calmly. He looked into her face and smiled broadly. Too broadly. "Kendall!" he said loudly. "My beautiful wife. Kiss me, Kendall." Then he dropped the leopard on the table and pulled Kendall into his arms. He kissed her thoroughly, oblivious to the crowd surrounding them. She smiled nervously when he let her go and offered him some coffee. "Coffee?" he said. "No, I don't want coffee. I want to dance with my beautiful Kendall."

She couldn't seem to close her mouth. "Dance?" she said at last. "Zach, you don't like to dance. Remember?" He laughed loudly. "Of course I do. I like doing anything with you. Come on," he said as he drug her into the center of the room. Before he could even get his arms around her Erica appeared at their side. "Kendall, what's going on here? Your husband is making a scene." "No he isn't," Kendall lied. "He's just enjoying your wonderful party." "He's ruining my wonderful party. Take him outside for some fresh air," Erica demanded as she clapped her hands together to get everyone's attention.

"It's time for Christmas carols," Erica announced. "Who wants to go first?" Zach rushed to Erica's side. "Christmas carols? Nice," Zach slurred. "I'll do Little Drummer Boy. Bianca, you can do I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, because I'm sure you did. Every year a different Santa though. Kendall, you can sing-" "How about if you do Silent Night," Erica said under her breath as she pushed Zach away.

"Oh please get this man out of here before he makes me a laughing stock," she said when Kendall reached her side. "I don't think your mom wants me to sing," Zach said in a stage whisper. "Is she still mad because I wouldn't kiss her under the mistletoe?" That was it. Kendall had reached her limit, and so had Erica. Kendall tried to make apologies as she drug Zach to the foyer.

"Wait here," she said slowly. "I'll be back in a second with Spike and then we'll leave." He nodded, but said nothing. Two minutes later they were standing on the other side of the door, breathing in the cool night air. "Ah freedom," Zach said, back to his old self. "Let's go home." No staggering. No loud talking. No slurred words. She glared at him, then started laughing. "You're gonna rot in hell, Zach Slater. Until then, let's go home."

-------------------------

"Zach?" Kendall said as she came down the stairs. She felt like she'd been looking for him all day. Why wouldn't the man just stay put for five minutes? She was about to call out to him again when realization hit. She knew exactly where he was. She walked into the office and found him just where she expected. He was standing in the middle of the room - wearing nothing but sweat pants - staring at the mural. Kendall couldn't help but smile, but she wasn't sure if it was the sight of him really enjoying her surprise, or the sight of his bare chest. He still had that affect on her.

"No hockey game tonight?" she asked as she settled herself on the leather sofa. He walked over and sat down beside her. "Nope. Team's off tonight," he said. "Good. That mean's you can play with me," Kendall said with a smile. "Oh, what did you have in mind?" Zach asked as he began to nibble on her ear. "How about the cosmetics executive and the delivery boy? Or the princess and the goalie? I've got an alternate version of that story that Spike's not ready to hear. Or, my personal favorite, the headmistress and the-" his words were cut off by Kendall's hand over his mouth.

"I was thinking more along the lines of the door-to-door chocolate salesman and the lonely housewife," Kendall said as she ran her hands over his chest. "After all, I think I won the last round. You owe me, Zach." She heard him groan deep in his throat as he drug his mouth away from her. He stood up and lifted her in his arms. "Well, never let it be said that Zach Slater does not pay what he owes."

9K, what a fantastic surprise to find Chapter 15 ready this evening!  It was so hilarious in places that I laughed until I cried...especially when Zach would be interacting with/about Erica!

What makes your writing so special is the fact that you keep your characters so true to their personalities, as we know them, that you really could slide right into the position of (head) writer for AMC with no sweat.  Also, your storyline is so perfect for this supercouple...it fits them; and it is right for the season, without the blood and gore and sadness, but a feel-good story as it should be.  I love it!!

So, Girlfriend, you really may get a call one of these days...just make sure you are not at the airport when your ship comes in!!

Happy Holidays!

Well said and worth repeating!  You put it on paper while the rest of us were thinking it.  I wish the head writer was as talented as 9K (Karen)!

Have a very merry Christmas everyone.
