Chapter 1

Zach stood silently still looking around the house he and Kendall had built together, but they may have built this house together, but not their life. He knew now that ‘his’ Kendall was no longer and he didn’t know if she would ever come back. He had made mistakes, big mistakes but he wasn’t going to anymore. He took Ian into his arms, bent and kissed Spike on the cheek and caressed him gently then Ian and he walked out of his former dream home.

As Zach drove to his and Ian’s new home, with snow falling rapidly around him, he thought about the last couple of weeks. Once he realized he could no longer stand being in a cold empty shell of the marriage he once or at least thought he had, he had sprinted into action. He got his best lawyer started on the paperwork for divorce and sought out a real estate agent that would not blab about whom his new client was and luckily in only a week he had found the perfect place. His only requirement had been outside the Pine Valley town limits and enough room in the condo/house for Ian and himself. His agent had found a house basically between the casino and Pine Valley with a huge backyard and three bedrooms.

He had made sure that while he was no longer going to be a part of Cambias Industries in any sense that it would be well taken care of for when either Spike or Ian wanted to take over running the company. He had made sure that there was no way for Ryan Lavery to take over again. Tomorrow their would be a vote by the board to decide who the new head of the company would be and the only candidates were new to the company and Pine Valley, but with a lot of experience.

Zach had also made sure that once he left his old home behind that neither Kendall nor any of her remaining friends and relatives could get to him easily. His new home had state of the art surveillance equipment including a tiny camera right on the front porch so that he could see who was there before opening the door by looking into the small attached yet tasteful screen right in the foyer. He could not allow himself to get to close to Kendall from now on since she still looked, felt and smelled like his old love. He sighed and wiped a tear off his cheek as he swung the car into his new garage. He wanted to still be close enough so that he could see Spike when or if Kendall would allow it. He also wanted to be close by in case Kendall needed help; he knew he could not help outright but he could have one of his many employees help out in subtle ways. However there would be a price to being so close, while he had instructed no one in his employ to say her name or tell him what was happing to her; he could easily find out by opening a local newspaper or having the man who watched her report to him when or if he so ordered.

He hated thinking of the day when he had told his wife what was happing, she had just stood looking coldly at him as he talked and then had turned and thrown the word “good” over her shoulder. He had felt chilled to the bone. Had he created this person who no longer was his wife?

Kendall had woken up different, very different. Cold and hard like he had been before he had come to town, most people would think he still was that way, but he had melted a lot after coming to Pennsylvania. First while he had tried to woo back Maureen/Maria and then he had found out the truth about Kendall Hart; that she was indeed all Heart and so worthy of love. But after the coma she had changed and not for the better.

Chapter 2

As Zach got Ian settled he thought back once again to the night he had told Kendall about leaving her. It had really scared him how she seemed okay with everything, especially letting him take Ian. He had not really intended to take him, he had only been trying to get a rise out of her; to make her feel and act like his Kendall again, but she hadn’t. He couldn’t remember feeling so frightened in all his life and it was a strange experience, which he did not much like. Why had Kendall let him and Ian go so easily? He sighed as he settled his son down for the night. As he caressed Ian, he wished he was standing over the crib with Kendall and she was pregnant with their third child. He would never forget the woman he had loved and still did love. It was just too hard to stay and watch her destroy herself. He would always watch out for both her and Spike through third parties, but he could not bear seeing her in person again.

After making sure Ian was comfortable and everything was in order upstairs, he slowly walked down to his study and poured a good amount of whisky from his new decanter into his newly bought set of whiskey glasses. He sipped on the liquid as he stood staring out into the now dark backyard. There was public lake just beyond the picket fenced yard. He had known after seeing the house that he would tear up the picket fence and put in a nice wrought iron fence. Picket fences were not his style. He had bought all new furniture to fit into the house and the décor was between modern and classic. A few of his mother’s things that had not been ruined were now in the house. He wanted Ian to have a safe and as real a home as possible under the circumstances.

He went and sat down in his new leather chair and put his feet up on the ottoman and drifted back to his trip to Paris shortly after Ian had been born.

Zach arrived at Bianca’s apartment and after the initial greetings and tucking Miranda in bed the three of them had gone out to a cozy café down the street. After eating and drinking for awhile, they went back to the apartment to chat and drink some more wine. It was there that Bianca and Reese had asked and he and said no to being the donor to their child.

After he left around 11pm he had called a colleague he knew in the city to have him look into Reese and in a few hours had found out things that he wished he did not know. It had made him decide to still say no when he said goodbye and they had pressured him one more time. He left disgusted with both of them for having even tried to get him as their donor and saddened to think that there was another relative out there who appeared to be heading the wrong way in life.

Then Reese had called and they had a long chat and she admitted to knowing about him and that is why she had wanted him to be the donor, so she could have a connection to her father’s family. His heart had softened after listening to her, she had sounded so sincere. He knew nothing of his uncle or his family. There had been a rift between the two brothers and Zach had no doubt it was his father’s fault. However he still said no to being the donor and Reese had hung up angrily.

Zach had some of his men looking into his uncle, Peter Cambias’s life and that of his families to see what they were like. All he knew right now was that Peter had died three months ago from lung cancer while living in Vancouver, British Columbia with his wife, Caroline. His men were all over trying to find information and papers about the other Cambias family.

Chapter 3

Two Weeks Later

Zach was on his way to the casino to see Kendall. She had insisted upon seeing him face to face, for what she wanted to say to him; he had reluctantly agreed. They hadn’t spoken to each other; it had been done through his new nanny for Ian, Mary. He had read the reports his men emailed him every night on both Kendall and Spike. He felt nauseated whenever he read about Lavery holding her in his arms and the kisses they shared; but what puzzled him was how Kendall was acting about it all. She seemed to be herself in public, but in private, according to what his men and the ones they had bribed on Lavery’s end, she acting very different in private. As far as it could be determined, they had not slept together, yet. Kendall, according to his sources, acted cold and remote to Lavery when they were alone or with members of her family. Apparently, she was like that with everyone, except Spike. She had let him know through Mary that Spike would be with her when they met at the casino. He, in turn, was bringing Ian. If he didn’t know better he would think she was playing everyone, but to what end? He was very nervous about seeing her in the flesh again; he hoped he was doing the right thing.

***

Zach walked into the shadowed, quiet room and stopped abruptly; seeing her sitting on the sofa playing with Spike was more then he could stand. He walked over with Ian and handed him carefully over to Kendall and then turned and over his shoulder he threw out the words “I’ll let you and the boys have some alone time, I’ll come back in half an hour.” He ignored the yelling of his name as he walked out. He leaned against the door and took out his handkerchief; that he always had with him now, and wiped the sweat off his forehead with a shaky hand. What is the matter with me, he thought as he continued down the hall. He walked to the surveillance room on the floor he was on and luckily it was empty. He sat down and watched Kendall interact with her boys. She seemed exactly as she always did with her boys, loving, warm and funny. He could see blotches under her eye makeup and she was paler then he had ever seen her, which gave her a haunted, ethereal look. She was still as beautiful as ever, but no longer his. He sighed and leaned closer studying every little detail. She was happy, now; but she had sounded scared and angry when he hadn’t stayed. He picked up the phone and asked his private secretary to get him all the files on Kendall and Spike to him immediately.

***

After Sue, his private secretary, left he went through all the reports, looking for a clue and writing it all down. Suddenly he felt like his heart had stopped as he pieced everything together. He stood up and ran out the door and down the hall as fast as he could. He barged through the door and took, his Kendall in his arms, he felt wonderful and whole again as they kissed.

Chapter 4

Zach stood looking out his large window at home remembering last night and what had followed after he had barged back into Kendall’s life.

They had kissed forever, it seemed; they were so thirsty for each other. Finally, though they stopped because they remembered their boys. They turned their heads together to see Spike smiling up at them and Ian sleeping with what seemed like a smile on his cute little face. Both had laughed happily as Zach swept Spike up into his arms and they all had a family hug standing around Ian’s crib.

Later, after they had put Spike and Ian in the second bedroom of the suite; Zach and Kendall had sat down to discuss what lay ahead on the sofa in the living area. First, though, Kendall had wanted to know how Zach had figured out she was faking it all.

“Well, at first, I believed that you really had changed and preferred
Lavery since there has always been a part of me that has been scared about
that since way back in our first marriage. Kendall had tried to interrupt, but he had put two fingers over her lips and had said “Let me finish, then we can discuss after I am done, okay?” She had nodded with a sad smile, so he had continued “However, after I got passed my anger and hurt, I started to think about everything that had happened since and even before the Tornado. You ‘changed’ even before the coma and I can’t say I know why you did it; but I now know without a shred of doubt you never stopped loving me because of what I saw while reading in the control room on this floor. I had only read the reports once, at night when I happened to feel at my loneliest, so I did not catch your mistakes or dare I say your signals to dear old hubby—Kendall made him stop for a moment as she burst out laughing, but then he continued “Anyway, I saw them tonight. I probably would have seen the ‘signal’ in your eyes or some other body part if I could have looked at you, but in my defense, you are so beautiful and I love you so much it hurt me too much to look directly at you earlier. Well, anyway, what I read that finally clicked my brain into place was many little things, like how you were not letting Ryan have sex with you; how you behaved coolly to everyone except Spike and I knew in my heart you loved Ian just as much as Spike, but like I said before, I was far to hurt and angry to process it all till now. The biggest sign was you pretending not to remember my telling you what Bianca and Reese asked of me when they showed up just before the tornado. When they told me afterwards how you reacted I was too scared for you and then later to mad to remember. But I remembered a few days ago and have been trying to figure it all out and like I said, it all clicked tonight. I told you they had asked and I said no and then I got that call from Reese when I said no again. According to the men I put on the case, they were frantic, and went searching for an ally; they found one in Ryan and you somehow figured it out, didn’t you? That’s why you are acting this way to get more information, but why didn’t you tell me?”

Chapter 5

Zach sighed as he put his hands into the pockets of his jeans while looking out the window into the dark garden beyond. He was really worried about Kendall, especially now that she had found proof that Ryan was working with both Bianca and Reese to not only get him to father a child with Bianca, but also break up his marriage, so Ryan could have Kendall totally to himself. Kendall had even found the reason for why Bianca and Reese would go along with that part of the insane plan; to take him down so that he would never fight them over their daughter/son. They hoped he would be so crushed over losing Kendall and their boys to Ryan that he would either drink himself into oblivion or commit suicide like he did after Ethan died.

The saddest part to Zach was that Bianca had no clue to who he really was; how could he commit suicide with Spike and Ian alive? And even if Kendall did leave him for real and good to Ryan Lavery, he still would not totally destroy himself, since he had to be strong for his sons that were still alive. A thought that he always tried to shove back into its little dark section of his brain came out as he thought of how he reacted after Ethan’s death. The truth was Zach knew that killing himself over Ethan would not have been good, mainly since the young man would have not been worth his death. He had never told anyone how he really felt, but the truth was he had hated his priggish son for how he had treated Kendall and how he had never seemed to really try or gave up to easily on his dear old dad. He was definitely not guiltless, but in his own way he had reached out and had given Ethan many chances to try to get to know him better. Zach groaned as he rubbed his face; he hated how he felt about his eldest son, but couldn’t help it.

Kendall had told him that when Ryan and the others in the house had been asleep she had crept around finding evidence and she had. She had laughed at how easy it had been to find the information; apparently no one was worried about being caught. She still had not found out how Bianca, Reese and Ryan were going to get Zach’s sperm to impregnate Bianca; there was still time, although Zach wanted his real family back and the intruders out of their lives for good. When he talked to Kendall again, he would ask how she felt about the possibility of never being family with Bianca again.

They had talked last night about Kendall’s feelings for Ryan and how she was totally over wanting to be a part of his life. After they had taken care of the problems they had now, they would make sure he no longer had any part in Spikes or their lives. The hardest part and been the question and answer portion of the ‘Ryan’ discussion. They had each asked a question and then the other would answer with elaboration when necessary; they had asked over 20 questions to get everything out in the open. They had agreed to be completely honest about the issue and it had been hard for both of them. After that talk, they agreed to no more serious issues for the rest of the night. They had quietly made love and then had fallen happily asleep in each other’s arms. In the morning they all ate breakfast together and then Kendall had taken a crying Spike home to the traitor’s nest.

Chapter 6

Two months later

Everything was the way it should be, but not as it had been, thought Zach as he waited for his wife to come down after putting the boys to bed. He was looking out into yard of their new home, a home free of intruders and safe from the world unless they allowed it in. His family was all he needed to feel good about life again.

At the start of all this, he had worried that ‘his’ Kendall was no longer, he had blamed her new heart which had come from a convict. He had thought that his life had altered for the worse, but now the tides had changed. In fact, their marriage had never been better; they trusted each other with their thoughts and feelings. Zach felt he now knew the real Kendall far better then before and hoped she felt the same about him. He had unburned himself as she had and they both felt better about it. She seemed happier then ever and had flowered under his love and support; he felt she had matured a lot during the time she had been trying to learn what was really going on. Perhaps they had needed the time alone to sort out their real feelings. They had both been hurt at the beginning, since neither had talked to the other about what they were thinking and doing, but once he figured out what she was up to; it was like the floodgates had opened up.

After he had learned everything Kendall had found out by sneaking around their old home, which had now been bulldozed and the land was up for sale, he had told his men everything and with the new information they had been able to find what they needed on the Cambias and Fusion computers and with a legal search warrant they had also found the papers at the old house ‘miraculously’.

It turned out that Reese was not a straight lesbian, she was bi-sexual. She and Ryan had been sleeping together since the first time they met when she arrived in Pine Valley. They had been in contact beforehand through Bianca and had been attracted to the sneakiness of the other before even meeting. Bianca had been outraged and cut them both out of her life. Although now the two were separated, but only because they were both in prison.

Reese had been raised a Cambias, but only in name. She had been adopted and loved by her new family, but she had rebelled against them when she turned 18 and found out she would not get the same amount of money as her two siblings. Peter and Caroline Cambias had struck out on their own at 18, away from both of their controlling fathers. They had created their own little business empire in the feed industry in different parts of Canada and the western states. They decided to put 2 million dollars away for each of their three children, but then disaster had struck and some of the money had to be used to save the business. Thus, John and Susannah Cambias had each been given 800,000 dollars and Reese had been given 400,000 dollars, which destroyed the family relationship.

Bianca, being the saint she was, made a deal and didn’t have to do any time. She was living in New York City with Miranda and Erica. Erica had not been able to not forgive her, so Kendall had pushed all three out of their lives for good. They were both sad about losing contact with Miranda, but realized it was the only way to cut the other two out of their family.
Kendall had found out that the three had planned on drugging Zach and then take his sperm without his knowledge with some drugs Ryan had found at Cambias Industries. Greenlee had been mad and left town once again, because her feelings were hurt. Kendall had felt bad for her, but had decided not to pursue any type of friendship with her again and so had he, thought Zach; besides their friendship had always been rocky.

Zach hoped Kendall would be okay with only him and the boys around to adore and fight with, but they were bound to make new and perhaps even better friends someday. Also, happily for both Kendall and him, she now owned Fusion all by herself. Life was certainly not going to be dull since they were expecting a third child which they both hoped would be a girl they could name Amelia Josephine Slater.

Kendall had never lost contact with Josh and he had come back to Pine Valley to help her, secretly. Kendall had confessed to him about Josh two nights after they had first seen each other again, but had been outraged when she learned that Josh and he had been in co-hoots against Ryan who had really stolen the money. Eventually, though, Kendall had forgiven them and now Josh lived in Kendall’s old condo in Pine Valley, ready for babysitting duty when needed; he also worked with Zach at the Seasons. Susannah Cambias had come with her brother to see Zach and they had all gotten on real well; it turned out Susannah had a business degree and she now worked at Fusion and lived in Zach’s old condo, across the courtyard from Josh.
